BRADBURY NEWSLETTER – 26 JANUARY 2018

Greetings to our school community:

It has been a great week meeting our potential 2018/19 Year 1 students and their parents.  Just a reminder, if your child was interviewed, you will receive an email from us on the 14th February.  Your acceptance of the place needs to reach us by 27 February.

Our Y6 students had a great time today trying out their STEAM projects – chemically propelled cars.  The students made the cars themselves and very much enjoyed watching how far and fast they traveled.

Principal

The Upper Choir, for children in years 4 to 6, will continue to rehearse on Thursdays from 3.00 to 3.45 pm. Our next rehearsal will be on Thursday, 25th January.

The Lower Choir, for children in years 2 and 3, rehearses on Wednesday lunchtimes and will recommence on Wednesday, 24th January. All children in years 2 and 3 are welcome to join and they should come to the music room as soon as they have eaten their lunch each Wednesday.

ORCHESTRA

The school orchestra will rehearse on Tuesdays from 3.00 to 3.45 pm. This is for children who play an orchestral instrument to at least grade 2 level. We will begin this term on Tuesday, 23rd January.

SCHOOL PRODUCTION

There will be a school production towards the end of the year and I am going to hold pre auditions for this over the next couple of weeks to gauge the level of talent of any interested children. This will initially be for children in years 3 to 6 although there may be opportunities for some year 2 children to become involved in the production.

There will be singing, acting and dancing parts available and I will be asking any interested children to prepare an appropriate piece and perform it at a lunchtime audition session over the coming couple of weeks.

The Fliparanzees
By Annie Edwards, Year 3

In a faraway land, lived some strange birds. They were called the Fliparanzees.  The Fliparanzees were called fliparanzees because they flip.  But one couldn’t even do a cartwheel. He just got his head stuck in a bucket. His name was Chip. He was mocked and laughed at. He listened to the squawks of the other birds until he couldn’t bear it.

One day he decided to leave the tribe.  As Chip was
crossing the Savannah, he found Elephant.

“What’s wrong?” he asked.  Chip explained.
“We‘d better go and see Giraffe.”
Giraffe mumbled, “Dear Ellie, what brings you here?”
The two explained.
“We’d better go and see Crocodile,” said the giraffe.

They padded to the river and there lay Crocodile basking in the sun.
“Go away!” he snapped.

They kept on travelling until they found a lion.  So they explained their problem.

“Hmm,” thought the lion.  Suddenly a little spark
appeared in his eye and he started dancing around like a firework.
“What is it sir?” said the elephant quickly.
“Well, there’s always the circus,” he said thoughtfully.
The lion talked to him about what a circus was and how to get there.
“Let’s go!” he cried.  They set off down the dusty lane..
“How much longer?” groaned the giraffe.
“There it is!” said Chip joyfully.
“This is disgraceful!” muttered the Crocodile. “What I think we should do,” he continued more loudly, “is throw a bomb on the big tent!”
“No!” said Chip.

Crocodile sulked silently. Elephant’s jaw dropped. A
circus performer stopped in her tracks and swept her gaze over the animals.  Up the hill Chip said “there we are, somebody’s noticed us.” He skipped down the hill and fell into a puddle of foggy rainwater.

The acrobat sneakily slipped to the front of the line to talk to the ringmaster who called the security.
“Chase these animals away!” he shouted.
The animals could hear what was going on.
“They’re not so nice,” thought Chip..
“RUN!”, screeched Chip.
They hid behind the undergrowth.
“We can’t stay here or they’ll find us,” said Giraffe.

Suddenly a tiger appeared.
“Come here.  What are you doing near that circus?” she said. They told their story again.
“My name’s Asia. About your problem,” said Asia, “you can do anything if you believe you can. Do you believe you can flip?” asked Asia
“I do!” said Chip eagerly.
“Do it,” said Asia.
A moment later Chip was twisting through the air.
“I’m doing it!” he cried.
“It’s time for you to go home,” said Asia calmly.
“Never!” said Chip. “I’m bringing you all with me.”
“Really?” gasped Asia.
“Let’s get going then.” said Chip.
He lifted one leg up and said “Grab on!” They flew through the air and landed in the centre of the kingdom.
“These are my new friends,” he said, “I can flip!” he
announced proudly

The others were really happy about this.  “My friends helped me learn so I let them live in the kingdom.”
Everyone had a new happy life.

Bradbury School Action Day – 27 April 2018
By Carol Farrington, Action Leader & Amanda Bremner, PYP Leader

This academic year we will, once again, have a whole school Action Day to celebrate and share the integration of action within our students’ learning experiences. Action Learning is the acquisition of the knowledge, skills and attitudes that empower us to be socially responsible citizens and to take authentic, sustainable action within the local and global community in order to make a difference to the world around us.

The Action Day is scheduled for the Friday the 27th of April. On this day there will be a variety of events happening, including packing bags of toiletries. These will be distributed to some of Hong Kong’s most needy and vulnerable people with the assistance of the charity Sunshine Action. Our aim is that up to 3000 hygiene bags will be packed by students and parent volunteers.

So, we’d like you to collect UNUSED toiletry items from any hotel that you visit during the forthcoming holiday and subsequent weeks right up to 27th April. Every day millions of unused and partly used toiletry items are thrown away by hotels and end up in landfills, so our action will have an environmental, as well as a service element to it. The children can bring the items on the poster, into school and put them in the Action Day box that is in their classroom. We’ll also run a competition between the classes for collecting the most items! Alternatively they can be placed in the boxes that are in the school foyer.

So… let’s get collecting!!!

Action Day Collection – A Quick Update

Thanks to parent and student support we’re doing quite well with the collection of toiletries that the students will pack into bags on Action Day on 27th April. These will then be distributed to homeless people in Hong Kong. However, to meet our target of 3,000 of each item we need to collect more toiletries than we can get from our nuclear families. So each student will receive a leaflet and we’ll ask them to think of a person who travels a lot (a relative from the extended family, a neighbour or a family friend) and they can give the leaflet to this person.

Therefore when your son / daughter brings home the leaflet we’d like parents to help be enabling the children to
personally pass on the leaflet to the intended person.

If you would like more than one leaflet, please tell us.

Thank you very much for your help.

By Lauren Lau, Health Professional, School Nurse

As we are entering the peak season of the flu, please be aware of your child’s health situation, and do not send them to school, if they are is sick or unwell.

Health is important in our school community; this is a small reminder to prevent illnesses from spreading.

Parents should not send their child to school if the child is unwell with cold/flu symptoms, as well as any signs of
nausea and vomiting, or if they have a fever 37.6 or above.

If your child does become feverish at school, they will go to the medical room, and the school nurse will determine if the child needs to go home, or is able to stay at school.

If your child is unwell, please contact the office or the school nurse to report this.

  • Sore throat/ Itchy throat
  • Dry Cough
  • Runny Stuffy Nose/ Nasal Congestion
  • Child states feeling unwell/ tired.

When your child does contract cold/flu symptoms :

  • If child has a fever, let them rest at home till their fever is reduced, and take them to see a medical doctor.
  • If symptoms prolong more than 7 days, take your child to the doctor.

Prevention of Cold/Flu:
