Bradbury Newsletter 24 March 2017
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE |
Dear Parents, Greetings to our Bradbury School Community! What a fantastic week we have had here at Bradbury School. We started it off with a very valuable CPD day for staff looking at how to develop resilience in our students and a culture of ‘failing well.’ Many thanks to the parents who attended the evening session. Your feedback was so positive that I have invited Lance King back to Bradbury next year to run another parent evening. We have finished the week with an amazing assembly from 4T and 4FP, taking us on a journey of their learning around living a healthy lifestyle…and relating it all to Newton’s law of universal gravitation! In between, Monday and Friday, each class has been active and engaged in a whole variety of learning activities that are engaging and motivating. Well done everyone. Next week, we farewell Mr. Stephen Wong, who leaves us to take up family duties. Mr. Wong has been an extremely diligent and committed teacher. Stephen, thank you for all that you have done for Bradbury students and we wish you all the very best. Sandra Webster Principal |

BOOK WEEK CELEBRATIONS |
Book week at Bradbury School has actually been “Book fortnight”, as classes across the school are involved in a range of activities to celebrate and build a love of books right up to our Easter break. Spreading our celebrations out in this way has allowed teachers to plan activities and engagements that suit the students in their particular Year level and link to other relevant learning. We started our week off with a visit from the author Chris White this Tuesday. Chris was certainly entertaining, and his hilarious stories, readings of poems and clever illustrations had students laughing long and loud. If your child is in Years 1- 5, do ask them about his visit. We also had a return visit from Gail Clarke, a local author, visiting with Years 1 and 2 and sharing some of her recent books with us. Over the two weeks we are also running a number of story readings at morning tea breaks and lunchtimes in the library with various ‘famous’ members of staff taking turns to be the storyteller. We also have a wonderful “Reading Throne” being set up in the PTA room, which classes will visit with their teachers to hear yet more wonderful stories. Here are some other activities that our different year levels are involved in as part of our celebrations:
As you can see there are many and varied happenings. You might like to help your students further celebrate at home – find a book to share together and enjoy!

LIBRARY NEWS : BOOK WEEK UPDATE |
CHRIS WHITE Chris White visited us on Tuesday 21 March. He gave four very dynamic and energetic performances of his poetry and how he illustrates. With a lot of audience participation, the students certainly had a fun-filled 45 minutes!
For more information on Chris White visit: Veggievampire.com
GAIL CLARKE Gail visited Year One on Thursday 23 March. She read her stories and shared information with the students about life as an author. The children loved the puppets she used to tell her stories. Gail will be back in next week with Year Two.
SHELFIES We have been asking children to take photos of themselves next to their bookshelf or a collection of books as we would like to make a gallery in the library. Email your child’s ‘shelfie’ to me at: The closing date for Shelfies is after the Easter holiday on Friday 28 March.
READING IN UNUSUAL PLACES Over the holiday we would like children to have a photo taken of themselves reading in an unusual place – under the bed, on top of the Macau Tower, sitting on playground apparatus etc. Email the photo to Mrs Thompson (include full name and class) jane.thompson@bradbury.edu.hk . or bring a printed copy into the library. The closing date for Reading in Unusual Places is Friday 28 March.
We are looking for parents who would be willing to come in at lunchtimes to read and share stories with students in their mother-tongue. If you’d like to volunteer then please email me and we can arrange a suitable time for you to come in. This week teachers have been visiting the library at break times to read to the students from their favourite books. The children have thoroughly enjoyed this storytime, spending their break in a different way. |

ACTION DAY | ||||
So far the response has been awesome from all Bradbury families. So far we have managed to get over 1450 packs which is absolutely tremendous. Next Friday will be the deadline for the cheques as we then need to submit the order. As we enter our final week we are still appealing for as much assistance as possible as we try to reach our goal of 3000 packs by 28 April 2017. If parents still want to donate a cheque (titled to ‘Bradbury School’) for $67 will enable us to purchase one pack. Should you wish to participate, please submit to your child’s class teacher. If parents prefer to continue purchasing in store the following brands and sizes have been amended to make this process easier:
Thanks in advance for your tremendous support. Our whole school Action Day, is scheduled for Friday, 28 of April. On the day, up to 3000 food bags will be packed by student and parent volunteers. 8:15- 9:00am – Assist with set up of tables for packing. 9-10am We will be coordinating and packing food bags with student volunteers 10:30-12pm we will also be continuing with this process. From 1pm we will be loading the packed goods for dispatching. We will need a significant amount of parent volunteers to assist with all aspects of the set-up, packing, loading and tidying up at the end of the day. Please wear comfortable clothing and shoes as there will be some lifting involved. If you are able to volunteer to work with the students on this please contact Ms Fritzi in the office to register your name and time. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. HIKE FOR HUNGER PICTURES
Parents, students and staff participated in the Sunshine Action Hike for Hunger on Sunday 12 March. MINDFULNESS EXTRA CURRICULA ACTIVITY, TERM 3
At Bradbury, we support not just our students’ academic needs, but also their emotional and social needs. Mindfulness is an experience-orientated training that brings about awareness from within rather than from correcting behaviour through external guidance. Practicing automatically changes behaviour, not immediately but little by little, over many months and years. Just like learning to play a musical instrument it takes time and there is always more to learn about oneself!
What do the children learn? · To concentrate and notice when they are not concentrating
There will be a mindfulness Extra Curricula Activity next term for students of Years 5 and 6. We’ll use the well researched method developed by the Academy for Mindful Teaching, popularly known as Sitting Still Like A Frog.
