Bradbury Newsletter 19th May 2017
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE |
Dear Bradbury School Community,
Greetings to you all! Thank you for your feedback around class placements. Your input is much appreciated and all requests will be considered. When we compile class lists we look at a broad range of factors to ensure that our classes are balanced and well mixed. We take into account criteria such as gender, ability, ethnicity, learning needs and the special mix of our children. Children have been asked to nominate up to five friends that they would like to be placed with. The goal being that they will be with at least one of their nominated friends. Interestingly, the friends students have asked to be with can vary from parental requests! In this case, we go with the child’s request. You will know your child’s 2017/2018 class on Thursday 29 June 2017. Please note, that given the amount of work and opportunity for parental input, these class lists are final and are not negotiable. As we need to work on these lists, today is the final day for parent input. Please send any requests to me by 4 p.m.
What a fantastic night we had at our recent Bradbury Showcase. Our children stunned and amazed us with their talent. How wonderful to be able to give students an opportunity to show us areas of talent that are outside the arena of the class day. Many thanks to the P.T.A for such great organisation and support. A special thank you to Wendy Cramond, who is our powerhouse driving force behind this event. Great job!
You would have noticed around the school, photos of students printed on canvas. These have succumbed to our weather and needed replacing. However, if your child is in one of these photos and you would like it, please let me know.
Thank you.

STUDENT LED CONFERENCES 2016-2017 |
As part of our annual assessment and reporting process, we will be organising Student Led Conferences once again this term. The purpose of Student Led Conferences is very different from that of Parent/Teacher Consultations in that it includes your child in the process and challenges them to take ownership of assessment of their work. The students will lead the conference, and will also take responsibility for their learning by sharing the process with you. The conference will involve your child discussing and reflecting on their work and identifying strengths and areas for improvement. It enables you to gain a clear insight into the kind of work your child is doing and offers an opportunity for you to discuss their work in the school context.
In order to facilitate this valuable learning opportunity for our students, on the day of their conference they will attend school only at the time of their conference. We will be sending you the time of your child’s conference soon. In the meantime please note the dates of the Student Led Conferences this year:
Tuesday 06th June 2017: Years 1 & 2 Thursday 15th June 2017: Years 3 & 4 Wednesday 21st June 2017: Years 5 & 6
We shall look forward to sharing this valuable learning experience with you.

FEEDING PEOPLE IN NEED |
As part of our school ‘Action’ focus, Bradbury is working with Sunshine Action to help people in need and is looking to take sustainable action in our community. Through a care programme for street sleepers and the homeless, Bradbury will be delivering around 80 -100 hot meals to people in need throughout the year. For this term, the event will be happening on:
Tuesday 23 May 2017 For each trip, we can accommodate a maximum of 27 people (15 students and 12 adults). The cost is $200 per person/student (donations on or above this are gratefully received) and this money will be put towards paying for the hot meals, snacks and drinks we deliver on the evening. Participants will meet at the Nam Cheong MTR Station (Orange Line) Exit A at 5.45 pm and the event usually last around 1.5 – 2 hours. Either Ms. Bremner or Mr. Heggie will be present at this event.

LAST CALL FOR RECIPES! |
This year the Bradbury PTA and the EcoDudes are joining forces to produce a school cookbook. The aim is to promote healthy eating, healthy lifestyles and to reduce the amount of over packaged lunch/snack food being bought into school which causes environmental waste. The Eco Dudes want to encourage families to cook together and for students to become more aware of what they are eating.
We are looking to gather a variety of favourite recipes from all members of our community. We would love parents/families to contribute a recipe by completing the following link to a google doc where we ask you to provide the following information:
· A title for the recipe · Information about the chosen recipe e.g where it came from, why you have chosen this recipe etc · Serves (number of people the dish will feed) · Preparation time · Cooking time · Ingredients needed · Method · Tips e.g how the food can be served, alterations to the recipe etc
This term, we will be asking parents/families to bake/make and bring the dish into school for staging and photographing by professional photographers/chefs.This will ensure the photos in our cook book meet the printing specifications and will enhance the overall look of the book. Please read the instructions and complete a submission on or before 16 June 2017. Here is the link for the recipe submission: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0ByIuKhe9hq2fb2l0azluZmlQbWM?usp=sharing Thanks and we look forward to reading your recipes. ADVERTISING IN THE BRADBURY COOKBOOK |
This cookbook will contain our community’s favourite recipes and will raise funds for a great PTA project that will benefit the students, as well as promoting less packaging and healthy food choices for our students.
We thought that one way of supporting the cost of producing this would be to sell advertising on the inside back cover. We will limit this advertising to Bradbury parent businesses only. It is envisaged that these advertisements will be business card size. Because of this, we will have a limited number of spaces available. Further details, such as the costings will be forwarded later; at this stage, we would like to gauge interest so that we can make space in the Cookbook accordingly. The more advertising, the more economic it will be for us all! If you are interested, please contact me on amanda.bremner@bradbury.edu.hk Thank you. Amanda Bremner – P.Y.P. MEDICAL NEWS: HEAD LICE |
We have recently found some students having head lice. We request that you please look through your child’s hair and check for signs of infestation. Main symptoms of head lice infestation are:
· An itchy scalp from the bites of the lice. These bites may become infected, may appear red or crusty. · Check for grey/ reddish brown live head lice. · Lice are small about the size of a sesame seed. · Lice crawl quite fast, making them hard to spot. · Check for oval shaped nits, usually a yellowish- white colour, firmly attached to side of hair shafts. Treatment of Head lice: · Please go to any store to purchase the special head lice shampoo treatment to treat your child’s hair. (Please follow the instructions on the package of the shampoo treatment). · Comb and oil care: Please comb your child’s hair thoroughly and remove any eggs and dead louse. · Use their regular shampoo, rinse, and repeat. Make sure you wash all the towels used and clean out the lice comb. · Repeat as directed. This may be some days after the first treatment and is a vital part of combating this problem as the second treatment kills any eggs that may have hatched and laid further eggs since the first treatment. · Work under good light, a magnifying glass can be used for greater clarity. · Divide the hair into sections and fasten off the hair that is not currently being screened. · Use a fine comb, and comb through the same section of hair and look for attached nits (lice eggs). Nits are generally laid close to the head but can be found anywhere on the hair shaft. (Especially behind the ears / base of head.) · Go through a section of hair starting at the scalp and proceeding to the end of the hair shaft. · The removal of eggs is important to prevent head lice from hatching again.
Cleaning Instructions: Machine wash and dry clothing, bed linens, and other items that the infested person wore or used during the 2 days before treatment using the hot water (130°F) laundry cycle and the high heat drying cycle. Clothing and items that are not washable can be dry–cleaned. If you find any of these symptoms, please treat the condition immediately. Medication to control head lice is readily available from pharmacies in Hong Kong. Children should remain at home until the infestation has been treated. Please note, school has no control over the treatment of head lice – we need all parents to co-operate and check/treat their children. Thank you for your help.

THE BRADBURY WRITING COLLECTION- VOLUME 4 …….now ready for you to read. |
As you may remember from last year, we started an initiative to produce and publish a magazine that would showcase writing from students across the school. The magazine pieces are a snapshot of the various types of writing that students produce across the school and the magazine provides an opportunity for students to have their own work published, and also to read the writing of other students. The magazine was named the Bradbury Writing Collection by the students who worked on the first edition.
The magazine is an electronic one which allows students and families access both at school and at home. We also produce a limited number of hard copies for in the classrooms and front foyer area, but the main idea is for the magazine to be accessed digitally and we encourage you to read this with your child online.
The production of this magazine is a collaborative publishing process where a senior school class works together with a junior school class. This edition is brought to you by students in 5C and 2T. The Year 5 students collected two pieces of writing from every class in the school and then spent time editing the pieces for spelling, punctuation and formatting. No changes are made to grammar or content by the editors. The draft is then sent to the students in 2T who produced illustrations for the pieces in the magazine.
Finally the whole draft is uploaded digitally using an online publishing platform and is now available for you to read here using the link below, or using the link on the school web page for the Bradbury Writing Collection. We hope that will take the time to access this from home and read it together with your child.
Congratulations students and teachers from 5C and 2T for a successful publication. Happy Reading!

Dear Parents,
The PTA, with support from the School, will produce a Bradbury School 2016-2017 Year Book. The Year Book is a beautiful memento of the school year and records the variety of activities your child has and will continue to experience at Bradbury school.
The book will be predominantly a colour publication in A4 size. It will feature photographs and pictures with a contribution from every class in the School. The book is due for release in June 2017.
Each of our Bradbury families will receive their first copy of the Year Book as part of their PTA Membership Fee. If you would like to have any extra copy, please complete the form below and return it to your class teacher by Friday, 26 May 2017 so that the print run can be arranged. The cost of each extra copy of our Year Book is HK$150.

Year 1 Cake Sale The Year 1 cake sale will be held on Thursday, 25 May 2017. We would be grateful if each Year 1 student could contribute one dozen (only) individual sized cakes for this event. Please have your child deliver the cakes to the school hall on Thursday morning. If you would like your container returned, please clearly label both the top and bottom with your child’s name and class. Please remember no nuts or nut products.
Although brownies and cupcakes are very popular, there is a school wide focus on health this year. To encourage children to make healthier choices we would love to see some alternatives that more nutritious and lower in sugar.
Volunteers – we require 9 helpers on the day between 9:30am and 11:00am, please email your class parent or the PTA at pta@bradbury.edu.hk or call 2893 2256 if you can help.
If you would like your child/children to buy a cake, please provide them with $10 and they will have an opportunity to buy a cake at morning break on Thursday.
Many thanks
Lin Gong – Bradbury School PTA Administrator |
SCREENAGERS |
After many replies from parents interested in seeing ‘Screenagers’ at Bradbury School, I can confirm that the date, time and location for the showing are as follows:
Time: 6 pm – 7:15 pm Date: Wednesday 31st May 2017 Location: School Hall
There have been some parents requesting that their children also come into school to watch the documentary. Due to a number of reasons including numbers expected and the accessibility of the content, we will open this showing to parents of children in all year groups plus accompanied children in Year 6 only.
If you are intending on attending, please send a cheque of HK$50 into school, made payable to ‘Bradbury School’. This cost is per family. If you could please note on the back of the cheque that it is for the Screenagers viewing and your child’s name and class, I will be able to get tickets to you.
