Bradbury Newsletter 18th March 2016

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Parents

Greetings to you all!

Wow, just one read of the newsletter shows what a busy place Bradbury has been over the last couple of weeks! It is great to see such a diversity in learning opportunities for our students.

Many thanks to the parents who attended our Maths parent evenings.  It was wonderful to have such a strong turn out and I trust that the information was of value to you in terms of understanding the ‘big picture’ of maths, the shift towards a conceptual approach to maths teaching, how problem solving and challenge supports this and how it looks at Bradbury School.

Staff also had a valuable CPD last Friday with Professor Sullivan and we are looking forward to working with him again next year. Professor Sullivan’s presentation is now on the homepage of our website.

My best to you all.

YEAR 2 UNIT OF INQUIRY: SPACES

We have been learning about the purpose and features of different spaces and how they change depending on their use, size and location. This week Year 2 went to Hillside Kindergarten. We were looking at how spaces are used and created. The children visited the kindergarten’s classrooms and play areas to make comparisons with a different school setting. The Year 2 teams took lots of notes and observations as they walked around Hillside and discovered interesting spaces, particularly the indoor sandpit!

We are looking forward to our excursion to Victoria Park this week to find out about outdoor spaces and how they are different to our school and homes. Well done to our Year 2 Inquirers!

Tom Flaherty – Year 2 Teacher

YEAR 4 UNIT OF INQUIRY : BODY SYSTEMS

Year 4 students recently shared their learning about Body Systems with their parents and the community. As part of this integrated unit, the students have been learning about measurement in Maths, heart rates, taking pulses and fitness in P.E and how all the body systems function as part of a transdisciplinary science unit.

YEAR 4 LOST PROPERTY ACTION

4H students would like to remind parents and students to ensure uniforms are named.

Over the past weeks, 4H have been sorting out the overflowing lost property bins. Over 200 items were in the bins with a majority of the items being clothes. Any named items have been returned and those without names have been washed by the 4H students and given to the PTA for secondhand sales. Older school uniforms and non-school uniform clothing was donated to charity.

Ashlye was inspired to bring her old uniforms from home and donate them to the PTA for secondhand sales.

“It would be easier to return lost property, if the current class was also written next to the name,” Lewi Cohen

“In Maths, we worked out the cost of the unnamed clothing when it was purchased. The total was $6700,” Emma Song.

“The total cost of the fleece jackets new, would be $3090,” Dakshita Kanchhal.

“It took 6 loads of washing to clean all the clothes!” Adam Au.

“Maybe other students have school uniforms they could donate to the PTA?” Ashlye Lo.

Chris Harris – 4H Teacher

 YEAR 6 ACTION DAY

Year 6 students recently held an Action Day to help raise awareness of local issues as part of the Year 6 Exhibition. Bradbury students came dressed in casual clothing and the students designed and sold various products to help raise funds for Hong Kong charities and NGO’s. The students raised $71,263.70 dollars which will be donated to charities, NGO’s or put towards buying something requested by an NGO e.g life jackets for plastic free seas, food for Christian Action.

REFUGEE WALK – YEAR 6 EXHIBITION

This week, Year 6 exhibition students visited the home of a refugee leaving here in Hong Kong.  The students had prepared a series of questions to ask him and had raised money to buy some Park and Shop vouchers which were donated on the day.

LIVING LAMMA

Year 6 students had a visit from the NGO Living Lamma who spoke to them about reducing waste, causes of waste and possible actions they could take to help this issue here in Hong Kong.

DOMESTIC HELPERS MORNING TEA

Some Year 6 Exhibition students are inquiring into Helper Rights. The students decided to host a morning tea at school to celebrate all the great things helpers do for families in our school. They organised a variety of fun games, provided morning tea and showed a video montage of the students thoughts and feelings about their helpers and the work they do.

AUTHOR NOBLEMAN VISITS SCHOOL

As part of our Literacy Week Bradbury was delighted to welcome Marc Tyler Nobleman to school. Marc is a non-fiction author who recently has been specialising in writing graphic novels. He captured the children’s imagination showing them how important and exciting in depth research is when writing this type of book. The children were full of questions afterwards with some being inspired to write their own stories!

CHINESE READING RESOURCES – MANDARIN MATRIX (P3 PUBLISHER)

Over the past few years, ESF Center have sponsored an online Chinese reading program for students at Bradbury School. However, the program stopped this year due to the cease of central funding and we decided, because of a relatively low pick up rate and high costs, that funding it ourselves was not a feasible option. Thinking that some parents might find this programme to be a useful tool to support your child’s Mandarin, especially if you are not a Mandarin speaker,  P3 publisher will come to school on 19 April  2016 at 5:00pm to offer you more details.

Please note: Bradbury School has no direct involvement in this company. It is parents’ decision whether or not the program is useful to assist your child in learning  Chinese and there is no obligation or expectation that you will purchase it.

TERRACOTTA WARRIORS: THE EMPEROR’S ADVENTURE

By: Yelena Bracovic – Class 3C

Today in modern China everything was okay.  The weather was sunny and it was a beautiful day.  I went to a museum to learn about the terracotta warriors.  There were 8000 soldiers staring with beady eyes at tourists at the museum.

Then I saw the coffin.  When I opened the coffin a beautiful person made out of jade was lying inside.  When I touched it ,  the jade  cracked open and I saw a real man inside.  He said “Who are you?”  I said “My name is Yelena Bracovic.  What is your name?”  The Emperor said “What is that big pink thing you are wearing?”  I said “They are my trousers! Are you crazy?”  He said “Yes”.

So I taught him about modern China.  First, we got in a taxi and he said “What is this thing like a fast horse, and where are its’ legs?”  I said, “Silly Emperor it is a taxi.”  When he looked out of the window he saw people on bikes and he said, “Ha ha they have two wheels taxis.  Ours is much better than those.”  I said “Dumb Emperor they are not two wheels taxis, they are BIKES.”

We stepped into a nice restaurant.  He tasted the restaurant’s food.  He loved the snake meat.  When he saw his brown drink he shouted “Why are these bubbles in my tea?”  I said, “Dumb emperor, it is Coca Cola!

“Who is that man with long hair?” “You are ridiculous Emperor, it is a lady and she is beautiful.” The Emperor said “I want to marry her”.  Then she said “I will not marry you because you look like a tyrant.”  Then, she slowly walked away.

After lunch I took him for a haircut.  He looked silly in the end.  He had pink dyed hair and it was all spiked up.  I laughed when he was angry.  After the haircut he went outside and everyone laughed at him.  The more the people laughed the angrier he got.  A man gave him a newspaper to make him joyful.  When he saw the newspaper he was happy because he learned that China was rich.  He read the newspaper again because he liked it.

Then we stopped at a big opera house.  The Emperor wanted to go inside because he wanted to hear some fantastic singing.  He went inside and bought the tickets.  When the show started an elegant lady who was from China sang in Chinese.  I didn’t understand the language but the Emperor enjoyed it.  After she stopped singing, we left.  I said to him “I didn’t like it”, but the Emperor said he loved it.

The emperor said “Thank you for teaching me about modern China.  I can go back to my coffin and sleep”.  I will never forget what happened that day!

EARTH HOUR

Each year the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) organises Earth Hour.

Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007 and has now grown to include 7000 cities and towns across the globe. Individuals, families and communities are encouraged to switch off their non-essential lights for one hour.

It would be great if members of the Bradbury School community could also take action to save electricity and show their Earth Hour commitment to Climate Change.
