Bradbury Newsletter 16th June 2017

Greetings to you all!

Congratulations to all students who were involved in our production of ‘A Midsummer’s Night Dream’.  This was an outstanding performance of what is quite a complex and sophisticated plot line!  Our children, however, made it so clear and easy to follow with their articulation, poise and confidence, whether speaking lines, dancing or singing.  Well done to you all – you were a real credit to Bradbury School!  Thank you to all parents who supported your child(ren) learning lines or dance moves.  Big thanks also to all of our teachers for supporting this, a special mention to Mr. Clothier and Mrs. Thompson for their hard work over many weeks.

You will be aware that over time, the issue of parents videoing at school has become problematic for us; hence my email to you all earlier this week.  I do not want to get to the point of banning phones, as most of you understand the need to respect privacy and certainly understand the reasons why images of our children should not appear on social media.  Just in case you missed it, below is my letter again.  I am always happy to talk further about this with you.

Dear Parents and Prospective 2017/18 Parents

At Bradbury, we take the duty of care to our students and school community very seriously. A part of this care is the right to privacy so that everyone can feel safe when they are in our buildings and grounds. I have therefore, been very disappointed to find that this right has been abused in what in I consider to be a disrespectful way, and no doubt in a way that would cause outrage should the children of the offenders be subject to it.

I would like to remind you that taking photographs of, or videoing students, teachers or other parents with phones or cameras, when you are in the or on school grounds, is definitely not permitted.

This is an important aspect of both child protection and privacy for all our students, teachers and parents here at Bradbury School. It is particularly important that we are vigilant about this, in this era of digital uploading to social media and online sharing where images taken of people, often without their permission, can end up anywhere.

There are of course times when you are able to take digital images of your own child, such as at concerts, sports days and other special events, and teachers will let you know at /of these times. If you are unsure of when it is ok to take pictures, please just ask a member of staff.

We do not want to ban phones or cameras at school, so we ask that you please respect this requirement as this has become on ongoing concern, with a number of parents videoing students, teachers and parents without their knowledge or permission. Could you also ensure that any other family members or employees who may be in school with your child are aware of this requirement?

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sandra Webster

Principal

With the very rainy days over the last few weeks we have noticed that there are many children who either do not have a raincoat or are bringing umbrellas to school that they cannot manage.

Students in Years 1 and 2 should not bring umbrellas but should bring a raincoat that they can take off on their own. The red poncho style ones sold through the PTA are perfect for this.

Please ensure that your child’s raincoat is clearly labelled with their name. Year 1 and 2 teachers do hang them up to dry in the corridors, but need them to be clearly labelled to be returned to the correct child.

If any Year 1 and 2 children do wear rain-boots to school they are able to sit on the benches in the downstairs playground to change them. You might like to send a plastic bag for them to put the wet rain-boots into their bag with.

Children in all other year level are also encouraged to bring a raincoat rather than an umbrella.  If your child does bring an umbrella please ensure that they are the small type and that they can manage it on their own. We have many doorway ‘traffic jams’ on wet mornings with students blocking the entrance with umbrellas that they do not know how to put down or and poking them into other student’s faces.

Thanks to your attention to this as we look forward to a few more rainy days!

Vice Principal (Lower Phase)

DISCO

Unfortunately we had to reschedule the Year 5/6 disco due to the weather. If your child is now unable to attend on the new date please contact the PTA office for a refund.

Students at the Year 5/6 and 3/4 discos should wear normal uniform to school and bring a change of clothes if they wish. They will be kept in class between the end of school and the start of the disco and will have an opportunity to change. Parents will be able to collect their children from the blue playground at 4pm.

For the Yr 1/2 Disco, students may wear their casual clothes to school, however please ensure that they wear their PE trainers. Please make sure the casual dress for the disco is age appropriate.  For example, summer casual/party clothes – and please- no inappropriate t-shirt slogans.

I would like to say a big thank you to the teachers, parents and PTA committee members who have volunteered to help with the discos and of course a huge thank you to our resident DJ Steve Fennelly!!

The PTA cannot hold any of our events without your help and support so THANK YOU.

As always, if you have any comments, ideas or suggestions, or if you are interested in joining the PTA committee please email pta@bradbury.edu.hk.
