Bradbury Newsletter 11 November 2016
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Greetings to all of the Bradbury School Community!
What an interesting week this has been on the world stage. The results of the US Presidential elections has certainly caused great discussion amongst staff and students alike. Our students were keenly aware of the candidates, their stand and their perceived popularity.
While we do not pursue or adhere to a particular political stance at Bradbury, it was interesting to see how globally minded our students were and involved with the happenings beyond Hong Kong.It also underscores how important the skills and attitudes we seek to instill in our students are in an ever changing world.

SHOES AND UNIFORM REMINDER
A reminder that school uniform shoes are black. These need to be sturdy school shoes, not party or slipon shoes, which may be hazardous in the wet or on stairs. Sports shoes should be white, or if you have difficulty locating these, a small coloured insert is acceptable. No coloured laces, lights or wheels. Sports shoes should only be worn on timetabled specialist PE days.
We encourage our students to take pride in wearing the correct uniform and additional, non-uniform items should be left at home. No nail polish, stick on tattoos or jewelry is to be worn.

DOUBLE PARKING
Thank you for not double parking outside of school when dropping off or collecting your child. It eases traffic congestion and certainly makes things safer for our students.

YEAR 2 HABITAT ACTION – A PLASTIC TOY SWAP
A visit from the Plastic Free Sea organisation made Year 2 students aware of the problem with plastics ending up in ocean habitats. We found out plastic is harming the animals and their environment.
In response to hearing about ways we could help reduce plastic, we decided to have a toy swap. No buying new plastic toys but instead bringing along toys we no longer used, to see if anyone else would like them.
And they did… everyone got to choose and reuse a toy from our very own toy shop!
A big thank you to everyone who helped and participated.
Claudia Tarr – Y2 Leader /Sheryn Cribb – Y2 Teacher
INQUIRY
Some Year 6 students are inquiring into blindness for their personal inquiry and recently visited founding members of Help the Blind Foundation;. The students watched a video about the work this organisation does in India and around the world and the students asked questions to further develop their understanding of the causes of blindness, how people become blind and possible ways they can help. A big thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Patel.

P.E. NEWS: TERM 2 AFTER SCHOOL REGISTRATION
B.A.M (Bradbury Active Mornings)
The P.E. Department has launched a new programme of activity to improve attentiveness. Every morning, the Y5 and
Y6 pupils take part in 4-5mins aerobic exercise to increase blood flow around the body and to release chemicals which
activates the brain to help them start the day on a strong footing. The teachers have noticed a difference in energy
levels which is very encouraging and we will filter this down through the school in 2017.
Wall of Fame
A new initiative being driven by the PE department to recognise children's success away from the classroom is the Wall
of Fame. Pupils nominate themselves at the end of the month allowing the rest of the class to vote who should be the
class nominee for that month. This could be from riding a bike for the first time to being the best and fairest at a netball
tournament. We also had a teacher nomination with Mrs Claudia Tarr being voted into the Wall of Fame by the staff
after a win in an individual paddling competition.
After School Activities
Term 2 Registration
With just over a month of Term 1 to go, I remind parents that we will open the Gateway registration for the After School
Activities on the 28 November. We will announce this nearer the time so you don't forget.
Football
Our Year 3 & 4 footballers were hosted at Sandy Bay, by Kellett school and competed admirably, acquiring 2 wins, a
draw and a loss across 4 games in a round robin tournament at Sandy Bay. Great to see the training from Mr Fennelly
being put into fruition and it creating a lot of enjoyment.
Netball
Our netball team travelled to CIS to compete in some friendlies and performed with merit, recording a couple of
victories. As you can see, from the photo, the atmosphere is all about fun with the self proclaimed, Unicorns.

MOVERS AND SHAKERS
The staff at Bradbury have decided to take the initiative in raising awareness and funds for Mens Health over the MOnth of MOvember. A selection of the male staff have taken the plunge in growing some distinctive facial hair on their upper lips. For 30 days, they will champion the MOustache and raise funds for men’s health. And others too sensitive to losing their already pristine facial hair have decided to challenge themselves to get MO-ve for 30 day. They will raise funds by showing that the best medicine for all types of health is to keep physically active. Of course, we have some MO Sistas involved and keeping the Bros on their toes.
Behind all the fun and jovial facial hair, there's a serious message to ensure men live healthier, happier lives. Movember is built to diminish the macho stereotype that many men hide behind. It raises awareness of the dangers of particular cancers which only affect men, and mental health issues which affect people daily. It offers anyone the awareness and the tools to recognise the symptoms which may effect someone close to them allowing them to be treated.
The great work by the Bradbury Bandits will imbed this appreciation of Movember to the pupils who may face such issues in the future.

BRADBURY COOKBOOK
This year the Eco Dudes, School Council and the PTA will be collaboratively designing, publishing and selling a
Bradbury cookbook filled with ideas for tasty treats and healthy lunches.
This great initiative was suggested by Eco Dudes as a form of action. Our vision is to significantly reduce the amount of
prepackaged snacks that are coming to school, and work towards becoming a waste free school. We are also hoping that it
will make the task of preparing healthy lunches and snacks much easier for our families.
Already there are some amazing lunches and delicious snacks coming to school. On Wednesday 7th Sept members of the
PTA will be in school and will be visiting classes on the lookout for great lunch box ideas. Students will receive a small
ticket/note which will need to go home with them, alerting parents that they have spotted something tasty that would make a
great entry into our cookbook. A link for submitting the recipes will be sent out in the next newsletter to parents and via an
email to staff. Additionally, if you (staff) have any great family recipes you are willing to share we would love these to be
submitted along with a high quality photo of the food being made or the final product.
The Ecodudes will also be running a competition for Bradbury students to design the cover of the cook book. Advertising for
this will be placed around the school and promoted to students through class emails, talks and flyers.
Please find below specific information around photo size and advertisement details.
