Bradbury Newsletter 10 March 2017
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE |
Dear Parents,
Greetings to you all! We have had a great week at school. When visiting classrooms, I have been very impressed with the wonderful learning opportunities that our children enjoy. These are diverse and engaging, from making clay aliens as a prompt for procedural writing (Y1) to exciting tents for the same purpose (Y3) to team research on an area of personal concern to present at the Exhibition (Y6). We have wonderful students at Bradbury who are eager to learn, confident and articulate young people. Thank you parents, they are a credit to each of you. Sandra Webster Principal

LANCE KING PARENT NIGHT |
MONDAY 20 MARCH 2017 5:00 P.M. – 6:30 P.M.
COURAGE, RESILIENCE AND FAILING WELL
On Monday, 20 March, Lance King will be working with staff looking at ways we can support a culture of resilience in our school. This means helping our children see the value in making mistakes – that they give them an opportunity to learn how to improve and that their value as individuals does not rely on always being successful in everything they undertake.
This is an area where it is particularly important to have a strong partnership with parents and to do this, we need to give you the opportunity to learn alongside us. Therefore, I invite you all to come along on 20 March so that you can have an understanding of the messages your child will be hearing at school and how you can support them at home also.
Please RSVP to Ms. Fritzi on fritzi.yu@bradbury.edu.hk.

MEDICAL NEWS: FIFTH DISEASE (PARVOVIRUS B19) |
|
We have recently found students in school that have contracted Fifth Disease. Please observe your child for this illness.
Signs and Symptoms
Fifth Disease begins with a low-grade fever, headache, and mild cold-like symptoms (a stuffy or runny nose). These symptoms pass, and the illness seems to be gone until a rash appears a few days later.
The bright red rash usually begins on the face. Several days later, the rash spreads and red blotches (usually lighter in color) extend down to the trunk, arms, and legs. The rash usually spares the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. As the centres of the blotches begin to clear, the rash takes on a lacy net-like appearance.
A child with the parvovirus infection is most contagious before rash appears (during the incubation period). Parvovirus spreads easily through fluids from nose, mouth, and throat. Spreads through large droplets from cough and sneezing. Incubation period is between 14-20 days, and they may or may not develop any signs and symptoms.
Prevention
Practice good hygiene, frequent hand washing can prevent spread of infection. If you find that your child has a fever, sore throat or runny nose, please keep them at home and do not let them return to school until they have fully recovered.
Please take them to see the family doctor once they have developed these symptoms. Thank you.

BOOK WEEK |
|
Bradbury Book Week commences on Tuesday 21 March and will run until the end of term on Friday 31 March. Each Year Group will be organising its own special events throughout the two weeks to celebrate books and reading, and to best suit the needs and interests of that group of students.
This year we are delighted to welcome two children’s authors and illustrators to Bradbury School.
Chris White is visiting from the U.K. on Tuesday 21 March. He will be presenting to classes from Year One to Five. Chris regularly visits schools around the globe, offering “creative poetry presentations that motivate, captivate and inspire students. He is a hilarious author and cartoon illustrator and a highly entertaining performer. Chris has also provided animations and poems for the BBC and has been involved in a group which inspires children to write and perform poetry. He has appeared at literary festivals, such as The Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Young Readers UK Festival, The Lincoln Book Festival, Off the Shelf Festival, and The Chiswick Book Festival and has taken his poetry and illustration talents to China, Dubai, Paris, Vietnam and The Congo.”
Chris will be showcasing some of his books while he is visiting Bradbury.
For more information on Chris White visit: authorsabroad.com/chris-white veggievampire.com
Gail Clarke is a returning author to Bradbury. She has more than 35 years experience as a primary school teacher in the U.K and Hong Kong. Her book presentations are lively, fun and engaging and have been enjoyed by children around the world.
Her animal adventure stories are based on the theme of migration and are told with the help of her story book puppets. During her visit on Thursday 23 March, Gail will be talking about her new book which is in the process of being published. It is a true story based on real events about the rescue of the smallest baby elephant ever to be saved and reared successfully. All proceeds from book sales are going to Save the Elephant, Tusk and Sheldrick Trust.
If you would like to find out more about Gail Clarke, you can visit her website: http://www.gailclarkeauthor.com/ If you would like to order any of Chris White or Gail Clarke’s books then they can be purchased at a reasonable price on most online bookstores. Gail’s books can be also bought directly from Amazon’s print-on-demand company or downloaded onto Kindle.

ACTION DAY |
||||
Firstly a big thank you for all the wonderful food pack donations that have started coming in. So far we have collected almost 500 packs from generous Bradbury families. We still are appealing for as much assistance as possible from the incredibly supportive Bradbury community as we strive for our goal of 3000 packs by 28 April 2017. One of our parents – Mr. Rick Ho, along with his donations has kindly introduced us to a supplier. We are now able to make a bulk purchase for some of the items at a significantly discounted price, as shown in red below. So we have decided to organize a school bulk purchase where we welcome families to donate a cheque (payable to ‘Bradbury School’) for a minimum of one pack costing $67. Should you wish to participate, please submit to your child’s class teacher. If parents prefer to continue purchasing in store, the following brands and sizes have been amended to make this process easier: Thank you in advance for your tremendous support. YEAR 4 FUND RAISER |
The Year 4 children have been busily working in different action groups to research and take action on the issue of single use plastic. The groups have been making posters, creating questionnaires, putting together presentations, writing emails to companies, writing elevator pitches and organising an event for parents. On Tuesday 28 February the Year 4 children hosted a fundraising event to spread awareness of this issue as well as raise some money to support further action during Bradbury Action Day on Friday 28 April. The children created a piece of artwork using trash which parents could take home with them after making a donation raising over $5000! Well done Year 4 children! Katie Phillips Year 4 Group Leader |

Year 2 Cake Sale
The Year 2 cake sale will be held on Thursday, 16 March 2017. We would be grateful if each Year 2 student could contribute one dozen (only) individual sized cakes for this event. Please have your child deliver the cakes to the school hall on Thursday morning. If you would like your container returned, please clearly label both the top and bottom with your child’s name and class. Please remember no nuts or nut products.
Although brownies and cupcakes are very popular, there is a school wide focus on health this year. To encourage children to make healthier choices we would love to see some alternatives that are more nutritious and lower in sugar.
Volunteers – we require 9 parent helpers on the day between 9:30am and 11:00am, please email your class parent or the PTA at pta@bradbury.edu.hk or call 2893 2256 if you can help.
If you would like your child/children to buy a cake, please provide them with $10 and they will have an opportunity to buy a cake at morning break on Thursday.
Many thanks
Lin Gong – Bradbury School PTA Administrator
