Bradbury Newsletter 10 February 2017
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE |
Dear Parents,
Greetings to you all! It has been a learning experience for us all at Bradbury this week as both staff and students have been working with Professor Peter Sullivan from Monash University in Australia. Professor Sullivan has been showing us the value of allowing the children to ‘struggle’ in order to be able to draw on the mathematical strategies they already know and apply their problem solving knowledge to a problem. Many thanks to the many parents who came to the parents evening. I trust that you found the evening valuable and gave you insight into how learning mathematics has changed since you went to school. I am looking forward to defending the position of second place (!) at the Curry and Quiz Night and look forward to seeing you all there for what is a great social P.T.A. event.

YEAR 6 EXHIBITION UPDATE |
|
The exhibition holds a place of special importance in the PYP, and the students will be working on it over several weeks. Participating in the exhibition demonstrates their learning in the PYP over the last 4 years. The exhibition involves the students working in small groups and becoming involved with organisations outside the school. Their participation and work is assessed, including their reflections, the methods students use, the way students link the exhibition to the transdisciplinary theme as well as any forms of action that students engage in.
The development of the exhibition at Bradbury School includes the following. 1. Discussing possible real-life issues or problems to be investigated 2. Posing questions that help to define the central idea and to decide upon a line of inquiry relevant to each group 3. Planning the exhibition 4. Gathering the necessary material 5. Recording and reflecting 6. Presenting the exhibition
Over the last week the students have been: 1. Discussing possible real-life issues or problems to be investigated Students have taken some time to reflect on the transdisciplinary theme How We Express Ourselves and the inquiries that they have been involved with over the past few years. This has resulted in discussions about various issues or problems the students have noticed or learned about at the Agents of Change Day which could possibly lead to an in-depth inquiry. These issues can be directly connected to Bradbury School or our local area, and they may also be relevant to children in other parts of the world. Students have talked with their teachers and Dr. Merrin Pearse (Dr. in Sustainability) about their ideas and questions to see if they could become the basis for the students exhibition. The Year 6 teachers and the other students have had ideas too, and all the ideas have been given careful consideration before students have made their final choice of issue based on their passions and interests. 2. Posing questions that help to define the central idea and to decide upon a line of inquiry Now that the issue or problem has been selected, the students need to have a basic understanding of their issue and be able to explain why it is important in order to investigate it in more depth. Some ways the students will be exploring the issues include the following. • Discussing the ideas with different people, both inside and outside school. • Visiting a local site/NGO /Organisation • Identifying and looking at available books and resources. • Considering how the issue connects to the transdisciplinary theme How We Express Ourselves. These explorations will help to form a better understanding of the issue and to unpack the central idea to further explain the significance of the students inquiry. Thinking about the PYP concepts (form, function, causation, change, connection, perspective, responsibility and reflection) that are related to their chosen issues then help the students to construct questions to guide their inquiries.
We will you keep you posted on the students progress over the upcoming weeks. Amanda Bremner – PYP Coordinator |

My Family from Shanghai By Aiden Yeoh – Class 2M
My family is from Shanghai and we are going to tell you about the historical changes in Shanghai since my great great grandpa moved to Shanghai. My great great grandpa was born in 1897 in Jiangsu Wujin and he opened his own luggage workshop. He moved to Shanghai in 1909 and Pudong was like a plain river with canoes. It was just farmland. When I came back to Shanghai, Pudong is full of skyscrapers. Great grandpa was born in 1923 in Shanghai and he worked for the government. Great grandpa used to go to the Lyceum Theatre and the Grand World. The Grand World was one of the most famous and largest amusement parks at that time. It is kind like Disneyland for me today. My grandpa was born in 1950 in Shanghai and he worked for his own textiles business. Grandpa used to work at the Shanghai Mansion. It used to be called the Broadway mansion. Shanghai Mansion used to be the tallest building at 78 meters and the tallest in Shanghai is now the Shanghai Tower at 635 meters. It is about nine times the height of Shanghai Mansion! My mummy was born in Shanghai as well in 1980. She used to play at the People’s Park playground which used to be a race course. I was born in Hong Kong in 2010. When I go to Shanghai I go to the Golden Temple, I eat yummy xiaolong bao, and I go to see great grandpa and grandpa. |

YEAR 3 CAKE SALE The Year 3 cake sale will be held on Thursday, 16 February 2017. We would be grateful if each Year 3 student could contribute one dozen (only) individual sized cakes for this event. Please have your child deliver the cakes to the school hall on Thursday morning. If you would like your container returned, please clearly label both the top and bottom with your child’s name and class. Please remember no nuts or nut products. Although brownies and cupcakes are very popular, there is a school wide focus on health this year. To encourage children to make healthier choices we would love to see some alternatives that are more nutritious and lower in sugar. Volunteers – we require 9 helpers on the day between 9:30am and 11:00am, please email your class parent or the PTA at pta@bradbury.edu.hk or call 2893 2256 if you can help.
