Greetings to the Bradbury School Community
Our school is always full of activity, action, and parents—something we really enjoy and that adds to our feeling of community.
We had a bright and colourful day on Thursday celebrating Diwali. Thank you to the wonderful mothers who created, supported, and implemented a wide range of exciting activities in support of this festival of light. You were amazing!
This newsletter contains some important information about a new curriculum initiative, which we are all very much looking forward to, as well as information around our RSE programme.

RSE Curriculum

Further to the RSE (Relationships, Sexuality Education) survey last year, where we gathered responses to gain an understanding around comfort levels if RSE outcomes are taught to your child, we would now like to share the updated RSE Curriculum Document (click to access) with you. Your child’s class teacher will let you know when they will be teaching these outcomes at each year level. We will also hold some workshops later in the year to provide you with further support if you require it. I have included a list of resources that we as a school use and you may be interested in purchasing to help support your child’s learning at home. You can also borrow these books from the library. Please contact your class teacher if you have any questions or concerns.

Bradbury Drama Workshops: Proposal

To enhance our curriculum focus on The Arts, we are introducing a new drama workshop initiative for this year only that has two objectives: 1) to expose students to meaningful experiences in drama and 2) to upskill all teachers in simple drama strategies that they can implement into their classrooms.
Ms Ryder, currently teaching in 1R, has a wonderful talent in this area and we would like to take the opportunity to allow her to share her skills and strengths with the rest of the school.
Therefore, starting on November 7th, for the next 24 Thursdays, Mrs Ryder will be working with each class for an allocation of one day (this includes an allocation for 1R).
This is a wonderful opportunity for all of the students at Bradbury to learn from a talented Bradbury teacher and I thank you for your support on this exciting new initiative.
Format of Workshops
Each class will have 2 workshops (1 short & 1 long) throughout the year:
Years 1-3

| In this longer workshop students will have the chance to experience a variety of simple drama games, techniques and strategies that teachers could easily use in the classroom to support learning in all areas of the curriculum. An anchor text will be used as a common thread to connect each game/strategy. This will also help teachers see how we can use drama in many different ways to support 1 particular text/concept/theme/skill or topic. The intention of this initial workshop is for students to have an enjoyable and varied drama experience with exposure to a wide range of types of drama activities. |
In this short and sharp workshop students will use some of the drama strategies and techniques that were introduced in Workshop 1 to bring the anchor text (also from Workshop 1) to life. It will be an extension of the work done in the first session and possibly the work that teachers have done in classrooms. The intention of this workshop is for students and teachers to see how we can use drama techniques as tools to have meaningful, in-depth and fun learning experiences. Students will have the chance to play, plan, problem-solve and present (that’s a lot of ATLs!) in this final workshop. |
Years 4-6

| In this short workshop students will be introduced to a variety of drama games. The purpose of the session is to ‘tune in’ to drama and get excited about using it in the classroom. The intention is for students to have an enjoyable and stimulating drama experience and for teachers to leave with some drama games that they can use in the classroom. These might be used to strengthen focus/concentration, build relationships and/or to enhance learning and teaching. These drama games will all be centred around a certain concept or theme that we will build on in the second workshop. |
In this longer workshop students will have the chance to experience a variety of drama techniques and strategies. Through the use of these drama techniques students will learn more about drama itself, but we will also use these techniques to go deeper into their learning about the concept/theme/skill/topic/ text that we are exploring. The intention for this in-depth workshop is for students to feel that they have had the chance to ‘go further’ with their use of drama and have been part of an engaging dramatic experience. Teachers will get the chance to try out some techniques that they may plan to use in their teaching. |
The How: It’s important that teachers feel that they get the ‘HOW’ to be able to confidently and effectively implement the use of drama in the classroom.

Here is the schedule for each Year group and class. Specialist timetables have been taken into consideration. Every class’s workshops have been scheduled within 4-8 weeks of each other to give the teacher a little bit of time to try out some of the drama strategies in the classroom, while keeping them close enough together so that the second can build on the first.

ESF Parent App

I am pleased to tell you that ESF have now finalised the ESF Parent App and it is going into testing from next week. We are very pleased with how it has turned out and we believe that it represents a significant step forward in how we communicate with you, our parents. The real power of the app, we feel, is that it is an ESF app, not a stand alone school one – so if people have students in more than one school, it will be able to give them all the information they need – about all of their children, in one place. I hope you will be as excited about this as we are. It is anticipated that the app will be ready to launch to everyone in January 2020. To this end, Bradbury has agreed to trial the app, and so we need 20 IOS users to do so. There will be a meeting with the ESF team next Thursday, 7th November at 5pm to go through this with the volunteers, so you need to be available for this meeting.

Playground Buddies

At Bradbury School we are committed to growing leaders through providing opportunities and support for our students. We recently had 21 applications to become a Playground Buddy from our year 6 team and they have already started attending meetings and training sessions with myself. This has involved learning how to help other students in the playground, suggesting and organising games for the children to play, helping to create friendships for those who can’t find their friends and suggesting ways to develop strong, happy and healthy friendships around the school. Our ‘Playground Buddies’ were officially launched this week and they will be meeting the rest of the school to introduce themselves in the coming weeks.
It has been fantastic to see the effort and dedication that these students are putting in to their role already, and I’m sure that they will have a huge impact in the playground this year. The Playground Buddies are: Liam Duddy, Samantha Wilkinson, Ridhima Singh, Kaira Seth, Kian To, Martin Ngai, Adrian Cheung, Stephanie Kwok, Natalie Sylvester, Sophie Hufton, Robert Hui, Ashutosh Tripathi, Taylor Foote, Ikram Brar, Ishina Khatri, Irene Wang, Cordelia Lee, Margot Briantais, Jaime Pharoah, Kiran Pengelly.
Box of Hope

Last Day for Collections: 19 Nov 2019
Six years ago, Bradbury began supporting the ‘Box of Hope’ charity. We will be participating again this year and the appeal will be organised mostly by the student councillors.
Box of Hope is an annual charity project aimed at providing useful/educational gifts to underprivileged children in Hong Kong & Asia, donated by Hong Kong school children and local organisations.
Your child’s role is to fill old shoe boxes with NEW, interesting and EDUCATIONAL gifts at home and drop them off at a collection point. Bradbury School is a collection point. The boxes are then collected and delivered directly to the children in need. Some of these children have never received a gift. Each child has been given a set of stickers that they will need to stick on their box of hope.
I received information about this year’s appeal late last week, and although your child should bring home an informative sticker to be stuck on the decorated Box of Hope shoe box next week, I wanted to flag this now, just in case you are looking for an activity for the last weekend of the break!
As the collection week is in mid November, please encourage your children to start making up their boxes over the next week or so. We will start collecting them up from next Monday.

What to Pack

Remember to make your box both FUN and EDUCATIONAL!

TOYS – something to love – Bear, soft toy, tennis ball, finger puppet, jigsaw, yo-yo, small musical instrument, torch(incl batteries), playing cards, small trucks and cars, doll, jewellery, make-up, hair accessorises
EDUCATIONAL SUPPLIES – something to do – books – (simple english), Felt pens, pens, pencils, pencil sharpener, rubber, colouring book, notepad, picture/puzzle book, chalk, pencil case, stickers, calculator, etc.
HYGIENE ITEMS – something to use – Toothbrush & toothpaste, hairbrush, comb, hair clips, a bar of wrapped soap, flannel. NO LIQUIDS PLEASE.
OTHER ITEMS – something to wear – Sunglasses, cap, sun hat, bangles, necklaces, watch etc…
What not to Pack

Year 6 Entrepreneurs

The Year 6 students are currently inquiring into how ‘Trade relies on systems of production, exchange and consumption of goods and services’ as part of their Unit of Inquiry. Over the next 4 weeks the students will inquire deeper into:
- The Factors that influence Trade (Connection)
- The role of supply and demand (Function)
- Our responsibility as consumers (Responsibility)
As part of our provocation for this Unit of Inquiry, the students were challenged to produce the ‘latest fad’ for the target
market of 7-8 year olds (Year 3 students). Within their groups, they were provided with opportunities to conduct market research, purchase materials of their choice, advertise, discuss pricing strategies, sales pitching and work as part of a team to gain the most profit from the sale of their product.
Both the Year 3 and Year 6 students had a fantastic afternoon of buying and selling which resulted in some heavy negotiations (at times!) and a lot of fun!
DTP Vaccinations for Year 6

The School Immunization Team of the Health Department, will visit our school on January 20th Monday to offer the Diptheria, Tetanus, and Poliomyelitis (DTP) vaccination for Year 6 students only.
Please fill in either the consent form/ refusal form, and return it to the medical room on or before, January 14th, 2020. The forms have been distributed to the Year 6 classes. Please complete the form, and attach your child’s medical records (copy/original). The medical records will be returned to you immediately after the immunization. If you do not receive all your child’s vaccination records, please contact me immediately.

Girls Football at the Peak School

On Saturday 26th October the Bradbury School U11 Girls football team competed in a 6 team tournament at the Peak School. All 7 girls involved worked incredibly hard throughout and were a credit to the school. As the tournament progressed so did the teams performance. The girls confidence continued to grow with each game played and as a result the goals started flying in. With no dedicated goal-keeper on this occasion the girls showed real team spirit by having 3 different players volunteer to go in goal over the course of the tournament. Overall the team finished in 3rd place and should be very proud of how they played. With only 4 weeks until the next tournament it’s time to hit the training field and continue working as hard off the field as on it! Well done to all the girls involved. Feeding People In Need

Bradbury families, staff and students participated in feeding people in need with Sunshine Action last night around the streets of Nam Cheong. This community event helped students contribute to collective action and reflect on and be thankful for their personal circumstances.
Get Redressed Day: Thank you!

Get Redressed day was a huge success and thanks to all those who support this day. The students enjoyed sharing stories of what they were wearing and are more aware of the issue of clothing waste.
The students raised HK$5,045.50 for Redress Asia which will help their work to prevent and transform textile waste in Hong Kong. The funds raised will also help Redress to deliver public education projects and enable them to collect, sort, recycle and redistribute clothing donations received by the public all-year round.
Thank you again for supporting this worthy cause and please continue to think about alternatives to buying new clothes.
Library News

FUN TO READ
The students have thoroughly enjoyed their time at the Fun to Read Book Fair this week and many thanks for supporting the event. The children embraced the opportunity to purchase books of their choice and browse the vast selection of items that were on offer.
CHINESE BOOK DONATIONS
If you have any traditional character children’s books at home, that you no longer need, then the Chinese Department are looking for donations for the students to borrow from the library. The books must be in good condition and suitable for primary age students. We do not need text books or kindergarten level books or below. Please send any donations to the library where we will accession them and put them out on the shelves for students to borrow and enjoy.
Diwali

Bradbury celebrated the Festival of Light. A variety of activities the children could participate in were run by members of our community and some children came to school wearing Indian clothing.

Updates from UWS Partners in Cambodia

Following the success of Run2Cambodia during Action Day 2019, I am pleased to be able to share some information from our United World Schools partners in Cambodia, UWS Khe Krom and UWS Kaeng Ngai. With thanks to the Bradbury School Community the existing classrooms at UWS Khe Krom have all had a new roof fitted and construction is underway for the brand new classrooms. As we were also able to support the running of UWS Kaeng Ngai school for the year we have also received information on their academic year to date. Please find more information here:
