Thank you for supporting our wonderful picnic last week. As always, it was a great night of socialising and fun.
Hats: Can you please ensure that you send your child to school wearing their hat? We need to tighten up on this aspect on keeping our children sun safe, so would appreciate your support on this. Teachers will remind students to wear their hat at breaktimes.

Buses

Please ensure parents/guardians are at the bus stop to collect students on time as at times the bus mothers are having to wait for substantial amounts of time for students to be picked up.
Parent Consultation Evenings

We will be running two parent consultation evenings in the first two weeks after half term. This is an opportunity for you to book a brief appointment with your class teacher to discuss your child’s progress this term.
There will also be an opportunity to meet with Chinese teachers in the Hall. This will be on a ‘walk-in’ basis with teachers seeing parents as you enter. Please ask your child who their Chinese teacher is before you come to the hall so that you can wait in the correct area.
If you would like to see Mr Maclay (PE) or Mr Clothier (Music), please email them before the day of parent consultation to book a time for a short appointment on the same day. These teachers will meet parents in their rooms on the Lower Ground floor.
Class teacher appointment bookings will be available on the Gateway from 3:00 pm on Friday 27th September
until 11:55 pm on Sunday 11 October.
To book the class teacher appointment, please log in to the Gateway and click on Parent Consultation on the right-hand side of the screen. From there, please choose the date and time.
Of course, these consultations do not replace our open-door policy. If you would like to meet with teachers about any issues, please email them to organise a meeting any day after school.

Year 2 Hong Kong Botanical Gardens Zoo Visit

What is a habitat and how do people’s actions impact them? For our inquiry unit, the Year 2s visited the zoo to investigate and discover more about animals and their habitats. It was a fantastic experience for them, where they were able to ask questions, record data about the animals they saw and learn about where they come from. A big thank you to all the parents for assisting us with supervising the students!

Know your Bio Plastics! Understand the terms and ask the right questions! Hong Kong does not sort its garbage out nor does it have an industrial composting center for garbage collected. Some places do, a lot of places don’t. If you are not sure, then the ‘made of plant’ plastic from whatever disposable item you have will NOT break down. Just know that and make good decisions.
Redressed

This October we are supporting local environmental charity Redress in their environmental awareness campaign ‘Get Redressed Month’. Through education, Redress’ goal is to help reduce textile waste, address over-consumption and educate students about the environmental impact of the fashion industry.
Why is fashion so polluting?
The fashion industry is one of the most polluting industries in the world, affecting everything from our land and water to the air that we breathe:
- It causes around 10% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions – more than the aviation and shipping industries combined – and is the second-biggest polluter of clean water.
- Globally, one garbage truck full of textiles is landfilled or burned every second, and in Hong Kong alone we dump 370 tonnes of textile waste into our landfills every single day. Yet 95% of textiles that are thrown away every year could be re-used, recycled or repaired.
- The world’s appetite for fast fashion, business models that promote new clothing in stores every week (as opposed to every season), and our habits of wearing clothing only a handful of times before throwing it away are exacerbating the problem. Globally, we currently make and consume over 100 billion new garments every year.
Get Redressed Clothing Drive
One of the simplest ways to reduce the environmental impact of our clothes is to make sure they receive a second life through re-sale, re-use or recycling when we don’t want them anymore. Redress Asia will be collecting unwanted clothes from parents, students and staff through a donation box located in our school office.
Please drop off your unwanted men’s, women’s and children’s clothes between the 14th Oct and the 24th Oct. Please note that shoes, school and work uniforms and home textiles e.g. towels, blankets etc. are not accepted.
All clothes will be carefully sorted by Redress and either re-sold at the Redress Educational Pop-Up Shop, redistributed for re-use by 20+ local charities including Pathfinders, Impact HK, Crossroads and J Life Foundation, recycled, downcycled or repurposed.
Get Redressed Day will be on Wednesday 23rd October
Suggested donation is a coin donation.
Get Redressed Day promotes healthy attitudes towards our consumption of clothing and celebrates alternatives to buying new clothes, such as swapping, borrowing or buying secondhand. Students should come to school wearing something that was not purchased from new. For example:
- Clothes purchased secondhand
- Clothes that have been fixed e.g. patch, altered, darned, new zips/buttons added
- Clothes that have been borrowed or swapped with a friend/family member
- The oldest item in their wardrobe
- Hand-me-downs
- Homemade or up-cycled clothes
- Items made from recycled yarns/plastic
Students taking part in Get Redressed Day are requested to bring a coin donation. All donations will go back to the charity Redress Asia and their work to prevent and transform textile waste in Hong Kong. The funds raised help Redress deliver public education projects and enable them to collect, sort, recycle and redistribute clothing donations received by the public all-year round.

Interested students are invited to enter the 11th Competition of the annual Hong Kong Young Writers Award. The theme this year is:
‘Future Adventures of the Greater Bay Area’
Students can submit entries in the following categories:
- Fiction
- Non-Fiction
- Cover Art (A3)
- Poetry
I will be holding a breaktime on Monday 14th October for students interested in entering in the library. Information about what to do and how to enter will be provided at the meeting. Students will be informed of the meeting by class teachers and reminded over the school loudspeaker announcement system.
Students must work on their entries independently, at home and all entries will be due into school by the first day of Term 2, Monday, January 6th.

FUN TO READ
Once again the Library is looking forward to hosting our annual Book Fair. This year we are inviting Fun to Read to Bradbury to sell their books in the Library. The Book Fair will be open from 8.00 am until 2:30 pm on Wednesday 30th October, Thursday 1st November, and Friday 2nd November.
Parents are welcome to browse at any time.
Students will have an opportunity to browse and make purchases during their assigned class time.
If you would like your child to purchase one or more book/s on their allocated day please send them with an appropriate amount of money in a secure purse or container. The cost of most paperback books will be around $100 and hardback books are generally priced between $150-$220. Please remind your child to be responsible for both their money and purchases. If you are concerned about your child handling money, please feel free to do your own browsing and purchasing together in their allocated class buying time.
Reminders and the class schedule will be sent out closer to the date of the book fair.
Y1 Immunisation

Year 1 Combined Diptheria, Tetanus, acelluar Pertussis, Inactivated Poliovirus Vaccine (DTaP-IPV)
The immunisation team of the Health Department will visit our School on the 21st of October (Monday). They will provide the DTaP-IPV for Year 1 students. The vaccination that the nurses provide is funded by the Hong Kong Government, and does not require a fee.
The forms have been distributed in class. Please fill in either the consent form/ refusal form, and return it to the medical room before October 14th Monday.
Please complete the form, and attach your child’s immunisation records. The medical records will be returned to you immediately after the immunisation. ( Copy or Original is acceptable).

Head Lice

We have recently found a student that has head lice in your child’s class. We request that you please look through your child’s hair and check for signs of infestation. Main symptoms of head lice infestation are:
- An itchy scalp from the bites of the lice. These bites may become infected, may appear red or crusty.
- Check for grey/ reddish brown live head lice.
- Lice are small about the size of a sesame seed.
- Lice crawls quite fast, making them hard to spot.
- Check for nits, lice eggs, attached to child’s hair.
- Check for oval shaped nits, usually a yellowish- white colour, firmly attached to side of hair shafts.
Following are some guidelines for the screening and symptoms of head lice.
Screening of Head lice:
- Work under good light, a magnifying glass can be used for greater clarity.
- Divide the hair into sections and fasten off the hair that is not currently being screened.
- Use a fine comb, and comb through the same section of hair and look for attached nits (lice eggs). Nits are generally laid close to the head but can be found anywhere on the hair shaft. (Especially behind the ears / base of head.)
- Go through a section of hair starting at the scalp and proceeding to the end of the hair shaft.
- The removal of eggs is important to prevent head lice from hatching again.
Cleaning Instructions:
Machine wash and dry clothing, bed linens, and other items that the infested person wore or used during the 2 days before treatment using the hot water (130°F) laundry cycle and the high heat drying cycle. Clothing and items that are not washable can be dry–cleaned.
If you find any of these symptoms, please treat the condition immediately. Medication to control head lice is readily available from pharmacies in Hong Kong. Children should remain at home until the infestation has been treated.
Please note, school has no control over the treatment of head lice – we need all parents to co-operate and check/treat their children.

Lost and Found & Jewellery

We have seen children wearing jewellery despite repeated reminders not to. Many of our teachers have witnessed the painful results of accidents to children caused by bracelets, necklaces or earrings. Therefore, we ask that your children do not wear jewellery to school and carefully note the following:
- No jewellery whatsoever may be worn during P.E. lessons for obvious safety reasons
- If your child wears a piece of essential religious jewellery, please contact a member of the Senior Leadership Team.
We would also like to remind you that valuables should not be brought into school. Children should not bring anything of sentimental value or expensive. We cannot take responsibility if they are lost. Children are always reminded to be responsible for their own belongings and we ask that you also reiterate it at home. Valuables include smartphone watches, prescription glasses, etc.
Lost and Found: Uniforms/Lunches/Water Bottles/Big items to the BLUE LOST AND FOUND BINS
We would like to remind parents to please label school uniforms, lunch boxes and water bottles so they can be returned to the students. Any unnamed items are placed at the LOST AND FOUND BINS located on each end of the floor. By the mid term holiday, any unclaimed items will be disposed off.

Diwali

Bradbury School would like to acknowledge and celebrate Diwali – the Festival of Lights, which is happening in October. Parents, students and staff will be running a series of optional workshops and activities for students to participate.

The PTA are looking for two parent or teacher volunteers to join a committee dedicated to looking into funding improvement projects around the school. If you think you can add value, or have any interesting ideas you’d like to share, please get in touch with us at pta@bradbury.edu.hk
PTA Fee
In the interests of being more environmentally friendly, the PTA Committee decided to stop printing the school calendar last year and instead moved this online. The calendar has previously been paid for out of your annual PTA membership fee and the committee have decided to instead put this money into a school wide recycling project. Our PTA fee breakdown therefore is:
- Yearbook – $150
- PTA Administration (including the shop & bus administration) – $450
- Recycling – $100
Starting this year, Bradbury are using HK Recycles who are able to provide a total recycling solution for the school. They will provide a monthly collection service for our glass/ plastic/ metal and paper which will cost $570. We will also pay for additional collections during special events such as the Winter Night Market. In addition, they will also give us recycling bags at a cost of $80 per bag.
