Greetings to the Bradbury School Community
A warm welcome back to the last term of the school year! As usual, a busy one, beginning tomorrow with our school Action Day. This is a big event for us, one we have been planning all year. It is going to be a day full of activity, so please volunteer if you can, or take the opportunity to Run2Cambodia!
Thank you also for responding to our RSE Parent Survey. The return rate was very high, which we are very appreciative of. Please RSVP to come along to our follow up meeting on 21 May – we want to hear your voice!
Our sustainability initiative has got off to a great start. Thank you for your support on this. We can already see a positive change.

Battle of the Books

On Friday Bradbury School hosted the semi-final of the 2019 Battle of the Books competition. Our Bradbury team ‘battled’ against five other schools, working well as a team to answer questions about the full range of texts in this year’s competition. It was a close competition, with only a few points separating the teams with only one team moving onto the finals. However, our team did a great job representing our school and expanded their repertoire of books by reading so many books in preparation.
Special thanks must go to Ms Jane Thompson and Ms Connie Leung who worked with our students to prepare them over the last term, and also organized the event at our school.

Food Collection Update
Thank you for all the food donations we have collected so far. We are aiming to collect 4000 sets and are well on our way to achieving this.
The numbers at the moment are:
- Cooking oil – 1432
- Tinned food (with ring pull tops) – 1436
- Healthy drinks – 1049
- Honey – 996
Please try to collect some more sets (1x honey, 1x oil, 1x tin of food, 1x drink) over the Easter holidays or feel free to drop a cheque in for one set ($150 made out to Bradbury School) to the box at Reception. We are also collecting reusable bags and plastic bags to pack the food items in on Action Day.
All Day Activities Happening Around Bradbury School
Fair Trade Monitors
The Year 5 Fair Trade monitors will be selling Fair Trade products from Crossroads Foundation which include bags, toys, keyrings, soap, bowls, cards as well as Fair Trade food items. The Crossroads products have been carefully chosen by the students and have lovely stories which reflect the journey of the objects from various countries around the world. The objects range in price from $20 to $150.

Helper Photo Booth
Due to its success last year, students will again be able to have their photo taken with a person who helps them. This will be run by Bethune House who support domestic helpers through difficult situations. The students can arrange to meet their helper/auntie in school to have a photo taken together at the booth and write a message of appreciation which will be displayed around school.

Action Agents Lettuce Sale
The Action Agents are having a plant sale to raise money for Khe Krom School in Cambodia that Bradbury partners with in conjunction with United World Schools. Our goal is to raise at least $7800 which will be sufficient to fund about 10 less fortunate students to be able to attend school in Cambodia for a whole year. The Action Agents will sell
completely organic baby lettuce sprouts that have been growing in the school. The cost will depend on the size ($10 – $25) and they will be sold in reusable fabric plant bags that are not made of plastic as we are environmentally conscious. The lettuces will not be fully grown so we hope you will continue growing them at home.

Used Sports Equipment And Sports Clothing Collection
The PE Department is currently running a collection of new and used sports clothing and equipment. Any donations will be gratefully received and will be redistributed by the Crossroads Foundation, Hong Kong. The collection is ongoing until Friday 3rd May. Please bring your unwanted items to the PE office on the lower ground floor.

Action Agents Clothing Swap
The Y6 Action Agents and some Y3 ambassadors, in collaboration with Redress Asia will be running a used clothing swap. We need to collect clean, good quality (no damage) pieces of clothing such as:
- Tops
- Vest
- Pants
- Skirts
- Summer material suit items
- Accessories – bags and jewellery
A $10 coin/note donation will be collected upon entry for UWS and people will then be free to browse and choose any items of second hand clothing to take home. All left over clothing will be donated to Redress Asia.

Y6 Gender Equality In Football Exhibition Group
The group will be selling PARK footballs to support girls playing football in poor countries at a cost of $250 per ball. Year 1 Covered Playground 10:00 -10:30am and 12:00 -1:10pm
PE Run To Cambodia
‘Run to Cambodia’ is taking place in partnership with United World Schools and Khe Krom, Cambodia to support the fantastic work being carried out in the rural communities to ensure that all children have an opportunity to access education. All Bradbury School students will have the opportunity be sponsored to run laps of the tarmac playground which will be recorded. We hope that in just 1 day our students and staff will be able to collectively run the distance from Hong Kong to Steung Treng province, a total of 1,303 km.

South African Mobile Library
The library is collecting book donations from Bradbury families for The South African Mobile Library cause. The books will be sent to South African through Sony HK. We would like to collect more book donations for Action Day.

Year 6 Exhibition Action Continued In The Community
The IB encourages sustainable action and some of the Year 6 students will be continue their actions they started for the Exhibition. These students must individually arrange their visit with the NGO/organisations and liaise with their class teacher as we must know where and who the students are on this day for safety reasons. The students will be required to document what they do and they will be asked to share this with their classmates and Ms. Bremner (PYPC). – All day, off campus
SUSTAINABILITY REMINDER
No single use plastic is to be bought into Bradbury School after the Easter Holiday.
This includes:
- Packaged food – biscuits, bars, chip packets
- Juice boxes
- Individually wrapped cupcakes or treats for birthdays
- Plastic bags
- Plastic straws
- Takeaway coffee cups
- Wrapped cakes for cake sales or PTA events
- Take away foods e.g. McDonalds
- Water bottles
All single use plastic in lunchboxes will be sent home and not disposed of within school.

Run2Cambodia

When was the last time you ran to Cambodia??!
This year during our Action Day on Friday 3rd May you will have the chance to help Bradbury school run to Cambodia!
We are very lucky to be partnered with a school called Khe Krom which is situated in the Steung Treng province of Cambodia. Here they provide an education for children who have no opportunity to attend a Government run school. In partnership with United World Schools (UWS) we can help support the continued development of Khe Krom school, within the local village, to provide access to education for all.
It is as a result of this partnership that ‘Run to Cambodia’ has been born! During Action Day 2019 all students will have the opportunity to run laps of the tarmac playground. These laps will be recorded, counted and collated and hopefully in just 1 day the students and staff of Bradbury school will be able to collectively run the distance from Hong Kong to Steung Treng province. A total of 1,303km. We will mark out a track of 100m. This will mean as a school we have a target of 13,030 laps to complete! Do you think you are up for the challenge? Student Led Conference 2018-19

As part of our annual assessment and reporting process, we will be organising Student Led Conferences once again this term. The purpose of Student Led Conferences is very different from that of Parent/Teacher Consultations in that it includes your child in the process and challenges them to take ownership of assessment of their work. The students will lead the conference, and will also take responsibility for their learning by sharing the process with you. The conference will involve your child discussing and reflecting on their work and identifying strengths and areas for improvement. It enables you to gain a clear insight into the kind of work your child is doing and offers an opportunity for you to discuss their work in the school context.
In order to facilitate this valuable learning opportunity for our students, on the day of their conference they will attend school only at the time of their conference. We will be sending you the time of your child’s conference soon. In the meantime please note the dates of the Student Led Conferences this term:
Thursday 23rd May 2019: Years 5 & 6
Wednesday 29th May 2019: Years 3 & 4
Tuesday 04th June 2019: Years 1 & 2

Relationship Sexuality Education Parent Survey Results

Thank you for completing the survey on RSE (Relationship, Sexulaity Education) at Bradbury School. We gathered 221 responses and would like to share the ‘comfort level’ ratings with you. These are for the sample outcomes presented for the four phases.
We asked you to indicate how you would feel on the scale of 1 – 5 about these outcomes being taught to your child at each phase. The majority of respondents rated the outcomes as 4 or 5 indicating that they are comfortable with the outcomes being taught to their children at each phase. Please see the responses below.
We also asked for comments, and while we received many comments that were very supportive of these outcomes being taught, we also received comments which indicated you would like to know the following:
- information about how these outcomes will be taught;
- language used when teaching;
- further clarification on some outcomes; and
- whether the outcome was appropriate to the phase.
We would like to follow up this survey with a parent meeting to act as a focus group to help understand any further concerns our community may have, and to also clarify further our teaching approach to RSE.
The meeting will be held at Bradbury School at 5:00 P.M. on 21st May, 2019. Please RSVP to attend meeting. If you have any expertise in this area, we would love to hear from you.
We are taking introducing this curriculum area slowly and sensitively as we want to ‘get it right’ and ensure that we have your support and understanding. In the end, it is an ESF requirement to teach this curriculum area and we may not be able to please everyone but listening to your voice as parents is important to us.
Book-Week at Bradbury School: May 6th-10th 2019

It is always a good time to read books at Bradbury School. However, once a year we like to have a special celebration all about books and the joys of reading. This year’s Book-Week is next week and teacher have planned a series of learning activities to engage our students in this focus on ‘books’.
Here’s a quick summary of what will be happening . Please note that some year levels will email you directly if there is anything that you need to do to support your student with these events.
- Year 1 – Daily “Stop, Drop and Read” with surprise visitors to the classes and a Book Character dress up day on Friday
- Year 2 – “Stop, Drop and Read” surprise sessions, book cover designing and a special author focus
- Year 3 – A special focus on students’ favourite books and ‘Stop and Read’ sessions
- Year 4 – Creating a display with book covers and ‘blurbs’ for a book that students have read
- Year 5 – ’Stop and Read’ surprise sessions and cross-class sharing of book reviews, blogger posts and online book ‘trailers’ over a number of days
- Year 6 – Book reviews and front-cover art linked to the UOI, performance poetry and linking a book to the upcoming assembly.
- Chinese – special story-reading to students
- Whole School – Book readings at break times in the library, Book Cover competition, guess the daily ‘Mystery Reader’, Staff reading in unusual places display , and the publication of our next “ Bradbury Writing
Collection” Magazine.
Celebrating BOOK WEEK at home.
In addition to all the fun events happening during the week I would encourage everyone to try something at home to celebrate ‘books’ and ‘reading’. Some ideas for things to do at home might include:
- Reading a book to/with your child – with our busy schedules, don’t forget to take the time to actually sit down and read a book together !
- Act out a favourite scene from a book with family members/friends – making ‘plays’ and acting out stories is a great activity.
- Write a book – students can write their own version of a story that they know/like or make up a new one.
- Book based word searches and quizzes – write quiz question or choose words from a book to make sets of ‘snap cards’ from a favourite book, then play them at home – great for comprehension and vocabulary
building. - Visit the library ! A great way to celebrate Book Week, particularly if you haven’t been to your local library before- look for new authors or types of books.
- Make a list of everyone’s favourite books at home- ask them what the book was about and why they liked it.

New Tales of the Ming Treasure Voyages

As Johnny Depp said , “ Life’s pretty good and why wouldn’t it be? I’m a pirate after all!”
Well, pirates used to travel the seas looking for precious items. But in the early 1400’s a fleet of ships set sail from China. I carried boxes and cargoes of gold, silk and other precious things for the people on board to give away as presents. There were seven voyages by the Ming treasure fleet.
Sometimes they met nice and peaceful people and gave them the presents they had brought. In other times they had to fight battles and deal with nasty pirates. Luckily the ships also had weapons.
But this group of travellers did a wonderful thing by winning themselves a place in history. Historians, looking back, said China truly ‘ruled the seas’ in those days.

Getting Ready
On a stormy day I move all my important things onto the ship. My ship is called Evan 1. The most important things to bring are the gold and silk because I will give them to all different countries for making new relationships.
I am the captain of Evan 1 and I feel excited about this adventure. This time I will bring some shooters to fight, two chefs to cook, and some sailors to look out for evil pirates.
Swapping Things
Now I am sailing to Japan to give away some of the gold and silk. Before we get to Japan the evil pirates suddenly came to attack the ship in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The evil pirates blocked my way to the island of Japan. My sailors started to attack them back and defend the evil pirates. The Japanese sailors came to help me and we won and defeated the evil pirates.
After that my sailors and I arrived at the island of Japan. I came here to give the gold and silk to the Japanese because I want to thank them for helping us fight the evil pirates together.
Crossing the London Bridge
After eating sushi in Japan my sailors and I stared our next journey to London. I found out that my chef forgot to bring food so now we needed to swap things to get food.
When we have enough food we gave it to the chef and the chef started to cook. Then we give them some gold and silk because they gave me a lot of food.
After that we crossed he London Bridge. Now we are ready to go to other countries to give the gold and silk away.
Going Back Home
After visiting a lot of places now we will go sailing back to China. On this adventure I feel happy because we ate sushi and we gave a lot of gold and silk to many countries.

BOOK WEEK
Although we are always celebrating books and reading, next week is the official ‘Book Week’. The teachers are busy planning reading activities for the children. Teachers from across the school have volunteered to share their favourite stories with the children during break times in the library. We will be holding a competition to see who can recognise fifteen books from their cover as well as bookmark making and other activities. Teachers will be busy taking a photo of themselves reading in unusual places for the children to vote for. Don’t forget to ask your child what they did for Book Week!
BATTLE OF THE BOOKS
A huge well done to all the students who represented Bradbury School in the Hong Kong Battle of the Books. The competition was hosted at Bradbury this year and we had five international schools join us for the battle: French International School, German Swiss International School, Island Christian Academy, Discovery Bay International School and Kiangsu and Chekiang School. Bradbury team consisted of nine students who all battled hard in a very close and nail-biting competition seeing FIS as the overall winners. They will now battle it out in final on May 14th! Congratulations to our Bradbury Team for a well fought competition:

SOUTH AFRICA MOBILE LIBRARY-ENGLISH BOOKS FOR COLLECTION
Thank you to all the families who have made donations to this worthwhile cause. We have been busy packing books to send off for Action Day.
We are still collecting books. The Sony Corporation of Hong Kong are collecting ‘gently’ used, English, children’s story books for this project. It’s a great opportunity to send used books to a good home. If you would like to donate books to this cause then please read the information below. We will collect any donations from you in the Bradbury School Library and have organised for the Sony Corporation to collect the books. The last date to send in books is on Action Day, Friday 27th April.

Y1 and Y6 Immunisations MMRV/Hep B (2018-19)

Please be reminded that the School Immunisation Team from the Health Department will visit our School on the Wednesday 15th of May 2019 . Those that have not given their medical records with their consent forms must bring their medical records on that day.
Please inform the teacher if your child is sick, absent or not fit for the MMRV and Hep B vaccination on the day of immunisation.
Parents who have not received the MMRV/Hep B immunisation consent/refusal forms, please contact me immediately. If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Change of Date: Year 6 Students Island School Uniform Fitting now on Monday 27 May 2019
Save the date, time to be advised:
There will be a uniform fitting day at Bradbury School PTA shop on Monday 27 May for the Year 6 students that will be progressing to Island School in August 2019. Samples of the Island School uniform will be available for students to try. Alternatively families will need to go to the supplier’s retail outlet at Lai Chi Kok, Kowloon-side to fit uniform.

The PTA, with support from the School, will produce a Bradbury School 2018-2019 Year Book. The Year Book is a beautiful memento of the school year and records the variety of activities your child has and will continue to experience at Bradbury school.
The book will be predominantly a colour publication in A4 size. It will feature photographs and pictures with a contribution from every class in the School. The book is due for release in June 2019.
Each of our Bradbury families will receive their first copy of the Year Book as part of their PTA Membership Fee.
If you would like to have any extra copy, please complete the form (click to download) and return it to your class teacher by Friday, 10th May 2019 so that the print run can be arranged. The cost of each extra copy of our Year Book is HK$150.
