Dear Bradbury School Community
Greetings to you all. What a great two weeks it has been since our last newsletter! Our Year 3 students amazed us all with their business acumen in their Market Day. Thanks to all parents for your support of this.
Thank you also to our Year 5/6 parents for supporting your child’s Student Led Conferences. These are a meaningful way for you to gain an in depth understanding of the work your child is able to talk about and explain to you. I look forward to our Y1/2 and Y3/4 ones shortly.
Congratulations to all of our participants and winners in the 4th International Zhou Youguang Cup Chinese Talent Show. This was a wonderful event and an excellent showcase for the high level of Chinese competence amongst our students.
Please talk to your child about the importance of staying hydrated and of wearing a hat in this very hot weather. We will support you in this by reminding our students to wear their hat and drink lots of water, but we rely on you to provide the water bottles and hats!
We need you!
We have a few vacancies on our fabulous PTA for next year. This is a great way to become involved in our school! We meet as a committee on a regular basis – approximately every 6 weeks for about 1.5 hours. It is social, engaging, and rewarding. Please let me know if you would be interested in joining.

Zero Plastic Lunch on World Oceans Day – #ZeroPlasticLunch

Bradbury School is super excited to support CNN’s Zero Plastic Lunch on World Oceans Day June 8th.
What’s happening?
On June 8, CNN will be live blogging World Oceans Day on CNN.com around the clock. They will feature the best Zero Plastic Lunch efforts on their live blog, which will be on the CNN homepage all day.
What our students will be doing?
- Ditch single-use plastics on June 8!
- Sharing pictures of their normal lunch in the days/weeks beforehand and then take pictures of their Zero Plastic lunch on June 8 to see the difference with no packaging.
Teachers will let parents and families know more details closer to the time.
SEEKING ALL GREEN THUMBS

Bradbury School is very proud of the achievements we have made in greening and creating attractive spaces for members of our learning community. To continue to sustain our current practice we are seeking help from the Parent Community .
Part-time Gardener
We are currently looking for a Part-time Gardener to maintain our spaces. The role will include:
– caring for the lush green wall we have around the school;
– watering potted plants along the corridors;
– replacing plants on a needs basis;
– pruning and maintaining the Lower Playground Garden.
This is a paid position and the necessary applicant would need to be available for 10 hours per week. If you are interested in this position, please contact Alan Tang, alan.tang@bradbury.edu.hk.
Parent Volunteer/s
The students at Bradbury School are becoming very keen gardeners. To help support the development of sustainable gardening practices across the school we are looking for parents who would be available across lunchtime periods to work with small groups of students. Students may be involved in activities such as weeding, watering, pruning and propagating new plants. This is a voluntary position and the interested person/s would need to be available for one hour per week. Please contact Amanda Bremner for further information, amanda.bremner@bradbury.edu.hk.
Student Led Conferences 2017-18

As part of our annual assessment and reporting process, we will be organising Student Led Conferences once again this term. The purpose of Student Led Conferences is very different from that of Parent/Teacher Consultations in that it includes your child in the process and challenges them to take ownership of assessment of their work. The students will lead the conference, and will also take responsibility for their learning by sharing the process with you. The conference will involve your child discussing and reflecting on their work and identifying strengths and areas for improvement. It enables you to gain a clear insight into the kind of work your child is doing and offers an opportunity for you to discuss their work in the school context.
In order to facilitate this valuable learning opportunity for our students, on the day of their conference they will attend school only at the time of their conference. We will be sending you the time of your child’s conference soon. In the meantime please note the dates of the Student Led Conferences this term:

Dental Care Notice 2017-18

Please note that the Student health service /School Dental Care Service appointment slips has been sent out to the students. Please remind your child to bring their own toothbrush, and own SCDS hand book.
Please note, for Year 1 students, they will not have the School Dental Care Service Student Handbook, however they will be issued one, when they visit the dental clinic. Please keep this book, as they will need it for every visit to the dental clinic.

Year 3 Market Day

On Wednesday the 16th of May, the Year 3 students held their Market Day as a part of their How We Organise Ourselves UOI. This unit saw students looking into how and why businesses are created as well as how businesses persuade customers to need and want their products. Students developed products based on market research they conducted by questioning their target market. These products were marketed and then sold at the market day to the wider school community.
Once their “business loans” were paid back to the Bank Manager, John Ainsworth’s twin brother, Benjamin, students donated their profits to the charity of the year groups choice, which this year was the Changing Young Lives Foundation. I am pleased to announce, that after all the hard work and dedication from the Year 3 students and the Year 3 teaching team, this year, the students raised $23,133.80 profit! We are now working with the management the Changing Young Lives Foundation to purchase training kits and play equipment that can be lent out to parents of kids with special needs.

Bradbury Sports

AQUATHON
This is probably the most physically and mentally demanding of all the sports and activities Bradbury School competes. 250m swim followed by a 1000m run. Our wonderful team of Y4, Y5 and Y6 students started training 8 weeks ago. The initial thoughts were quite dark and some of the kids pushed themselves to places they’d never been. And this was the foundation to their progress throughout the recent trainings and competitions.
Kellet Aquathon
We took 2 teams to Kellett to compete against most of the International primary schools in Hong Kong. For most it was there first time competing and they did this admirably. Our top team came fifth overall and our second team came a solid eleventh. Individually, Ashley Grantham produced a fantastic performance finishing as the 2nd fastest girl only 3 seconds behind the winner.
A lovely surprise was our reserve Sophie Hufton (Year 4) was given a chance to compete in a mixed team within the B competition, along side three DBIS boys and two Harrow girls. She performed extremely well and they came first overall in the B Grade Competition.
ESF Only Aquathon
This biathlon is a chance to race at KGV before the big competition, HK Primary Aquathon, on the 9th June. We timed the races ourselves and it gave our team a chance to improve on the first competition. Our students clearly gained confidence and learned a lot from the reflection at Kellett. Their time improvements were exceptional. Even on a longer course, I was really impressed that some were over 30 seconds faster, which is testament to their great attitude.
I’m really excited to see the team perform in the final race of the year. I hope their hard work and effort pays off. On a final note, there are some children who have trained for the weeks and never been picked. I have a huge amount of respect for them as they have been resilient, and have continued to keep training and getting better despite probably wanting to give up. Something we try to nurture throughout the school.
A special mention to Justin Grantham (parent) for helping throughout all these competitions. And to all the parents for encouraging their children to keep training and working hard.
CRICKET
Our cricket team competed in 2 competitions. Both in extreme temperatures especially for their pale skinned Scottish teacher. The first was against the International Primary Schools on Hong Kong Island. We came 4th overall against 8 schools, a great improvement from performances in recent years.
This led us to be seeded in the Cup competition at the recent HK Primary Schools Cricket Finals. We won our first 2 games against Discovery College and Clearwater Bay School. Both games were very competitive and the boys displayed great composure to overcome their opposition. Our final group game, against GSIS, was a bit hit and miss with some moments of brilliance and some lapses in concentration. But the boys realised this and wanted to learn from the experience and come back stronger.
The team progressed into the Cup Knock-out competition. The first opposition was Kennedy school, coached by the great, John Brewster. Kennedy opened the bat with an excellent innings. With 146 to chase it was going to be a tough ask against a well drilled side. With a few wickets in the opening couple of overs for Bradbury, things weren’t too promising but the team held it together and rallied in the last couple of overs with three sixes and two fours to pull up short at 143. Despite the result the boys were buoyant to finish the tournament on a high.
Kowloon Junior were the final opponents of the day and they knocked them off to celebrate a fantastic third place.
I’m really impressed with the team and the players who came to extra training sessions at lunchtimes. It shows that hard work and dedication with a drop of passion and fun, really pays off. There was no one who stood out in any one performance but I must mention Morris Daniel, as he led the boys with maturity and calmness throughout the tournaments.
Thanks to Steve Bemet and Matt Cook for their support with the cricket programme. And a big thank you to all the parents for their wonderful support throughout the cricket season.

BATTLE OF THE BOOKS 2018-2019
HK Battle of the Books is a live school-on-school battle to find the book trivia champion school.
The competition is open to international primary and international secondary schools, as well as local primary and secondary schools through a special modified section.
The Battle of the Books programme was introduced to Hong Kong international schools in 1999. Since this time, it has grown significantly. Battle of the Books is designed to introduce Year 5 & 6 students to a variety of reading material, build teamwork skills, and ensure that reading is fun.
Last year boasted the largest field yet, with a total of 104 teams registered for the 2016-17 competition.
Battle of the Books HK has now released the list of 20 books for the primary section for next academic year and we have copies in the library or visit their website. The books are always carefully chosen and make a great collection of recommended books for children to read. There will be a lunchtime Battle of the Books Club commencing in Term 1 2018.

Supporting Fair Trade at Bradbury

This year, the Y6 action agents have worked hard to introduce fair trade products into Bradbury School. As part of the Eco Schools programme we are currently working towards addressing the following questions:
Do the teachers have fair trade tea and coffee in the staffroom?
Are there any other fair trade products used in school? (fruit juice, footballs, bananas)
The Action Agents have learned how to budget, sampled and sourced fair-trade products as well as, surveying potential consumers to work out potential costs and profit margins. The students have then put together a fair trade basket in the staff room providing regular snacks for the staff.
Any money raised by the Year 6 Action Agents will go towards providing educational opportunities for children in Cambodia through a partner programme run by United World schools. The students will receive a Bronze level certificate for their actions and can go on to complete the Silver and Gold level requirements at Secondary School. As well as planning for and taking action there is a requirement for the students to share their learning with the school community.
Over the next few weeks the students will have a stall during Student Led Conferences for our community to purchase fair-trade ginger or chocolate biscuits ($20 per pack) and/or chocolate bars ($15 each).

The journey was a thrilling adventure,

4th International Zhou Youguang Cup Chinese Talent Show

I would like to take this opportunity to thank many of you for your great support in The 4th International Zhou Youguang Cup Chinese Talent Show.
There were 93 students from Bradbury School participating in the event. They were from both near native and mainstream classes. All the participants worked extremely hard practising for the competition. They have featured prominently in the awards . We had 35 winners and 52 awards were won by Bradbury students. Amelia Chow (6C) won a Chinese Culture Ambassador award for this year.
Bradbury School won an award as one of the three Excellent Participating Schools from the 34 participating schools. Ms. Angela Gou, Ms. Cassily Lu, Ms. Jenny Chen and Ms. Tracy Au Yeung also received Excellent Teacher awards for the high number of award winning students from their classes.
The big thanks also go to Mr Gethyn Clothier for conducting the opening performance. Our Winners Choir was the highlight of the award ceremony. Michael Chu (4H) was the student representative and shared his Chinese learning experience to the audience in fluent Chinese. Special congratulations also to two of our students, Sophia Ling (2T) and Calista Rosboch (6D) , who did an amazing job as comperes, showing great confidence and fluency with their Chinese language in front of the large audience.
I believe all of the students enjoyed this event. We are proud that the Chinese language is being so widely promoted in our Bradbury School community.

DISCO
Students at the year 5/6 and 3/4 discos should wear normal uniform to school and bring a change of clothes if they wish. They will be kept in class between the end of school and the start of the disco and will have an opportunity to change. Pizza will be provided during the disco but children should bring their own water bottles. Parents will be able to collect their children from the covered playground at 4pm. All Students attending the disco will be WALKERS on that day so please write a note in their diaries. Students in Yr 1/2 should wear their PE kit on the day of the disco. They will have a class shared lunch before heading down to the Disco.
Disco forms can be downloaded here and fees are due by Friday 8th of June.
P.T.A. SHOP OPENING HOURS FOR BEGINNING OF THE SCHOOL YEAR 2018-2019
For the convenience of parents, we have made special arrangements for the shop opening hours at the beginning of the new school year. We encourage the parents to purchase the uniforms and stationery early as it will be very crowded in the shop at the beginning of the new term. The PTA shop will be closed during summer holiday.
Open Date: August 7, 8, 9, 10 (open from 10:00a.m. – 3:00p.m.)
Our shop will open regularly Monday through Friday from 8:30a.m. to 11:30a.m. 13 August onwards.
I would like to say a big thank you to the teachers, parents and PTA committee members who have volunteered to help with the discos and of course a huge thank you to our resident DJ Steve Fennelly!! The PTA cannot hold any of our events without your help and support so THANK YOU.

Special Briefing: Island School’s Redevelopment
Island School
Dear Parents / Caregivers / Friends of Island School
A special ESF Board meeting was held at Tai Wai campus last week to discuss the Island School redevelopment and updated timelines associated with the tendering and building contracts. School Council Chair, Michael Lok and I were invited to participate in the meeting. I would like to thank the members of the ESF Board for this opportunity and their continued support.
The ESF Board were advised that the plans for the redevelopment, including Government funding for the project, are on track and the completion date for the works is now forecast to be March 2022, which means that the move back to Borrett Road is scheduled for summer 2022. It must be remembered that as with any building project, these dates are targets and subject to the usual revisions associated with major building works.
Tendering for the works is now underway and the design work is well advanced.

Jennifer, Gavin and their girls have been part of the ESF family for years. Gavin (Dad) is an ex-Glenealy and KGV student, and daughters Felicity and Natalie are Glenealy alumni too. Jennifer (Mum) is currently teaching in a supply capacity in GS for 3 days per week and is also a valued supply teacher within the ESF community. Sadly Gavin is very unwell and the family are reaching out to all networks for support. Please see the flyer below for further information.
