PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE |
Greetings to all of the Bradbury School Community!
Thank you for supporting your child’s learning by coming along to our Parent Consultations meetings. I trust these were productive. The feedback from you as I walked around the school was certainly very positive. If you feel that you need to follow up any aspect of the discussion with your child’s teacher, please feel free to make an appointment to do so. At Bradbury, ‘we believe that it is every child’s right to live in conditions which promote the optimum development of their intellectual, physical, emotional and social well being.’ (ESF Child Protection Policy August 2015). We do this by paying close attention to ensuring that every Bradbury student is safe from harm, neglect and abuse, through a variety of child protection measures. On Tuesday, 1 November from 5:00 – 6:00 p.m., John Ainsworth (Vice Principal) and myself will be running a session to let you know about these measures so that you can be confident that we take these matters seriously. BOX OF HOPE |
Three years ago, Bradbury began supporting the ‘Box of Hope’ charity. We will be participating again this year and the appeal will be organised mostly by the student councillors.
Box of Hope is an annual charity project aimed at providing useful/educational gifts to underprivileged children in Hong Kong & Asia, donated by Hong Kong school children and local organisations. You fill old shoe boxes with NEW, interesting and EDUCATIONAL gifts at home and drop them off at a collection point. Bradbury School is a collection point! The boxes are then collected and delivered directly to the children in need. Some of these children have never received a gift. Each child has been given a set of stickers that they will need to stick on their box of hope. As the collection week is the 31 October to the 14 November, please encourage your children to start making up their boxes over the next week or so. We will start collecting them up from next Monday. Remember to make your box both FUN and EDUCATIONAL!

YEAR 1 CHRISTMAS CAROLS |

YEAR 4 LANDFILL INVESTIGATION |
The Year 4 children are just beginning to inquire into their ‘How we organise ourselves unit.’
Our central idea is: There are systems involved in the production and distribution of food.” To start this unit off we decided to create a mini-landfill using some of the waste generated from home and at school! We have made predictions about what will happen to the different materials in our landfill and will keep making observations over the next few weeks! ECO DUDES PLANT SALE |
Eco Dudes will be selling plants on Wednesday, 2 November at morning break time by the Gym. All plants are $15. Please bring your own bag.
We have chilli plants, eggplants, basil and lemon balm along with flowering marigolds. The school received HK$2000 from the Greening Subsidy . YEAR 4 ORGANIC FARM VISIT |
This week the Year 4 children visited an organic farm to support their learning around our “How we organise ourselves” unit of work.
The children learnt about how farm systems work and the different techniques and principles used behind organic farming. As part of their learning, they were able to clear a field ready for new crops and were given a guided tour around the different sections of the farm. Katie Phillips – Year 4 Leader |
YEAR 1 VISITS ST. MARY’S REST HOME |
Year 1 students visited the St Mary’s rest home as part of their people in the community Unit of Inquiry. The students organised games and activities for the residents to participate in.

YEAR 2 AQUAPONICS |
Year 2 classes have been learning about Aquaponics and now have a tank in each classroom. Aquaponics grows fish and plants together in one integrated system.

WORLD FOOD DONATION DAY |
Thanks to all those who donated food for World Food Day. Our donations were gratefully received by Sunshine Action Action and will be distributed to those in need.

FEEDING THE HOMELESS |
A number of Bradbury parents and students attended the Sunshine Action feeding people in need event in Nam Cheong on Tuesday 25 October. The students distributed hot meals and food to people living on the streets and visited a homeless shelter where leftover food from the event was donated.

BRADBURY COOKBOOK |
As a part of our action focus, the Eco Dudes, in conjunction with the PTA will be producing a Cookbook which will be for sale later in the year. This cookbook will contain our community’s favourite recipes and will raise funds for a great PTA project that will benefit the students, as well as promoting less packaging and healthy food choices for our students.
We thought that one way of supporting the cost of producing this would be to sell advertising on the inside back cover. We will limit this advertising to Bradbury parent businesses only. It is envisaged that these advertisements will be business card size. Because of this, we will have a limited number of spaces available. Further details, such as the costings will be forwarded later; at this stage, we would like to gauge interest so that we can make space in the Cookbook accordingly. 17 November – Sausage Sizzle 2 December – WINTER NIGHT MARKET 17 February – Quiz and Curry Night SAUASAGE SIZZLE Order forms were sent home TODAY. Please return your competed form with payment by Thursday 10th November. Sausages are $30 each and come with bread and sauces. Pork or vegetarian options are available and will be delivered to the classroom at lunchtime on Thursday 17th November. Please send a plate or container to school for your child to use. If you did not receive an order form please print the one below and return to your child’s class teacher or to the PTA shop. Please note that payment is by CASH only. (No coins or Cheques please.) VOLUNTEERS are needed on the morning of the Sizzle to cook and deliver the sausages. Please email the PTA if you can help. pta@bradbury.edu.hk WINTER NIGHT MARKET This is the major annual fundraiser for the Bradbury School PTA, and all proceeds from this event benefit our children through the various projects the PTA sponsor. For this event to be a success we need YOUR HELP! Please keep an eye out for emails from your CLASS PARENT. They will be contacting you this week asking for DONATIONS for the Night Market including: USED BOOKS We are now collecting books for the used bookstall. Please go through your bookshelves and find a few to donate! We are particularly looking for children’s books, adult fiction and cookery books. Please drop off in the PTA shop. MONEY OR PRIZES We are not holding a raffle this year however we still need your donations. Instead of year group hampers, this year we will be collecting donations and prizes for a lucky prize draw. More info to come from your class parent!! Any contribution, no matter how small makes a huge difference – Thank you! NEW TOYS/GIFT ITEMS Please drop off any unwanted, NEW toys or gifts to the PTA Office. VOLUNTEERS We need LOTS of parent volunteers on the night, in particular we need parents to man the craft and games stalls and we would also love to hear from anyone good at facepainting who would like to get involved! MEDICAL NEWS: YEAR 1 AND YEAR 6 MMR/HEP B VACCINATION |
The immunisation team of the Health Department will visit our school on Thursday, 5 January 2016. They will provide the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR)/ Hepatitis B (HEP B) Vaccination for Year 1 and Year 6 students. The vaccination that the nurses provide is funded by the Hong Kong Government, and does not require a fee.
The forms will be distributed in class. Please fill in either the consent form/ refusal form, and return it to the medical room before Friday, 2 December 2016. Please complete the form, and attach your child’s immunisation records. The medical records will be returned to you immediately after the immunisation. Please note that the forms are not attached to this e-mail, they will be distributed in class. If you have any queries or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. Kind regards. LIBRARY NEWS |
We are once again looking forward to hosting the Bookazine Book Fair in the Library. The Book Fair will be open from 8.00 am until 2:30 pm on Wednesday 2 November , Thursday 3 November, and Friday 4 November. Parents are welcome to browse at any time!
Students will have an opportunity to browse and make purchases during assigned class times on one of those days, as well as during morning and lunch breaks. I will email the class schedule to parents by Friday 28 November and also include it in the school newsletter. If you would like your child to purchase one or more book/s on their allocated day please send them with an appropriate amount of money in a secure purse or container. Please note that $100 will cover the cost of most paperback books, and hardback books generally cost between $150-$200. Please remind your child to be responsible for their money. If you are concerned about your child handling money, please feel free to do your own browsing and purchasing together with your child.
