Bradbury Newsletter 4 December 2015

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Parents,

Greetings to you all!

Bradbury students have enjoyed some great cross cultural experiences this week!

It was wonderful to enjoy the talents of the Rosary Hill Secondary school choir who came to Bradbury as part of our lunchtime concert series.  We have been invited back to perform for them and the future, which we look forward to.

Some Year 6 students also participated in an ESF Cultural Exchange to Nanhai this week visiting local primary schools, enjoying lessons there and visiting some significant Nanhai sites.

Both are examples of one way we foster internationalism in our students – and both were great fun!

BATTLE OF THE BOOKS AND YEAR 5/6 BOOK CLUB

Last Friday,  a meeting was held for all Year 5 and Year 6 students interested in taking part in the Battle of the Books competition and/or the Book Club group. The teachers running these activities are Ms Rebecca Glick ( Year 5 ), Ms Sigrid Balle ( Year 6) ,  Ms Sue Bousfield (Librarian), and myself.

The Book Club group will meet every Friday and students have information about which books to read and when they will be discussed. The titles will be the ones from Battle of the Books (BoB) so that those students also doing BoB can deepen their understandings about the books.

Students who are choosing to do BoB have also received information and need to be reading the books now. The books can be borrowed through our school library or may also be found in public libraries. The Bob lunchtime meetings will start on Tuesdays after the Christmas break.

Happy Reading everyone !

BRADBURY FOOTBALL TEAM

On Thursday 26 November our school football team travelled to Kings Park in Kowloon for the Hong Lok Yuen football tournament.

The tournament started at 8:30 AM and finished around 1:30 PM. Bradbury were drawn with Kennedy School (who went on to win the cup), Kellett School (who won the bowl) and French International School (who won the shield).

We began with the French School and we played brilliantly, beating them by a goal to nil. Our second game was against Kellett School and although their team was strong, we defended well and hung on for a 0-0 draw. Our final group game was against a very talented and well organised Kennedy School who managed to score three goals against us.

Our performances put us in the second tier (the plate) and our semi- final was against Australian International School. Unfortunately, due to tiredness and the team finding defending against a marauding attack very difficult, we lost this game by five goals.

The team stayed positive however and are raring to go for their final tournament this Saturday morning at KGV. Fingers crossed!

Thanks to all of the boys and girls who have represented Bradbury School this term – you are all superstars!!

 P.Y.P.: ACTION NEWS
On Monday, 30 November, 27 Bradbury students and parents joined Sunshine Action to feed people in need. This was a very successful evening, delivering around 80 hot meals along with juice boxes, biscuits, noodles and fruit to people living on the streets. The students asked very good questions which Sunny addressed and by the end of the visit we were all feeling very humbled.

P.S.E. NEWS

Mindsets create attitudes to set backs – mistakes and challenges

FIXED MINDSET GROWTH MINDSET
·  Mistakes mean you’re not smart because if you are smart you would not make mistakes

·  Tries to hide mistakes and becomes defensive if discovered

·  May be judgmental towards self and others

·  Gives up, act bored, blames others

·  Mistakes are a natural part of learning

·  Confronts mistakes and learns from them, loves challenges

·  Helps others with their errors

·  Mistakes and challenges offer teachable moments

·  Getting excited about making a mistake and learning from it is a skill that can be modelled for your children

·  Talking to yourself out loud through a tough learning task so that you can be overheard help children understand the process of getting through a difficult learning challenge

·  Say things like, “What am I missing here?” “What assumption have I made that is wrong?” “I’m getting frustrated, I’d better slow down”

So that adults can help children, they first need to become aware of their own mindset and gradually change it to one of growth.

YEAR 1 VISIT ST. MARY’S HOME FOR THE AGED

A REMINDER ABOUT FOOD SHARING AND LOLLIES/CANDIES/SWEETS

With Christmas coming up we have started to see a number of students bringing candy canes, lollies/candies and other party food items to school.

A reminder that students should not bring lollies/candies/sweets to school and they are not a suitable item for inclusion in school lunches.   Also a reminder that visiting parents/adults are not permitted to hand out any food items to students other than their own child, when on the school grounds before, after or during school. We have a number of students with food allergies and special dietary needs and we ask that you respect this request for the safety of all students.

Birthday Foods

Cakes or biscuits to celebrate birthdays can be distributed in class with the class teacher’s permission.

Please consider the size of cakes and snacks sent in for birthdays,  as with many of the over-sized cupcakes coming into school, much cake ends up on the ground or in the rubbish bins as they are more than students can/should eat.  Mini cup cakes or ‘bite-sized’ snacks are more suitable and all food products must be NUT FREE.

Thanks.

ISLAND SCHOOL VISIT

On Thursday 3 December, 15 Year 6 students headed off to Island School for their first visit to their future secondary school.

The students had a fantastic time, taking part in a treasure hunt, a P.E. lesson and a humanities lesson. They also rather enjoyed the opportunity to dig out their Octopus cards and sample the food from the cafes!

It was lovely to see our old Bradbury students who were enthusiastically greeting this year’s cohort.

Thank you to the Island School staff for organising this first peek at secondary school.

Year 6 parents, please remember that regardless of the school you have been allocated, your child will be visiting South Island School in the first week back in school after the winter holiday. The dates are on our online calendar.

ACTION CLUB UPDATE: TERM 1
Throughout this term Action Club has been raising money for refugees and other communities.

action club

Experts have come in and taught us to make things like jewelry and jam.  We sold these items and raised approximately $6000.  We would like to donate this to our charity partners who help refugees, as well as many other disadvantaged people in the Hong Kong community. Some of these charities are Kiva/microfinancing and Sunshine Action.

WEST ISLAND SCHOOL PRODUCTION

The Creative Arts department of West Island School is excited to present the Caucasian Chalk Circle, which takes place on December 9 and 10 at 7pm.

caucasian circle

Tickets for The Caucasian Chalk Circle are now available!

“Terrible is the temptation to do good.”

The Caucasian Chalk Circle is an adaptation of Bertolt Brecht’s play about motherhood, ownership, love and loyalty. Set in a time of civil war, it explores Grusha’s journey through the mountains in search of a home and protection for the abandoned baby she has rescued and cannot leave to be victim of the brutal soldiers who are hunting it down for a cash reward.

Highly relevant in the current context, the story is retold in a contemporary setting to engage a modern audience and reflect on current events in the press today. It promises to be intense, interesting and thought-provoking whilst reminding us of the universality of stories that explore the nature of what is good and right.
